Connections between Tsunami’s and Earthquakes

Tsunamis are caused by a large displacement of water. Most tsunamis are caused

by earthquakes. An earthquake occurs when a large area of the Earth's crust suddenly

moves. When this happens underwater, big gaps may appear on the ocean floor. It can

occur in any major body of water. They are most common in the Pacific Ocean where

there are lots of underwater earthquakes and volcanoes. Countries with long coastlines

on the Pacific Ocean such as Japan, Chile, and the United States are all at risk of being

hit by a tsunami. However, tsunamis can happen anywhere. In 2004 a massive

earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused a devastating tsunami that killed over 230,000

people. Even though tsunamis slow down as they approach the shoreline, they can still

be travelling at highway speeds of over 50 miles per hour. A huge wall of water traveling

at this speed can cause major damage. A large tsunami can travel many miles inland

and wiping out entire coastal cities.

These past few days, Deadly earthquake hits southern Philippine island of Mindanao. ...

The quake's epicenter was located inland northeast of Tulunan town in Cotabato

province, south of Manila, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Seismology experts said there were no threats of a tsunami.

Last March 11, 2011, a magnitude-9 earthquake shook northeastern Japan, unleashing

a savage tsunami.

Not all earthquakes cause tsunamis. Mostly, Next to Earthquakes is it’s after shock.

Aftershocks are earthquakes that follow the largest shock of an earthquake sequence.
They are smaller than the main shock and within 1-2 rupture lengths distance from the

main shock. Aftershocks can continue over a period of weeks, months, or years.

Our safety is very important when it comes to Earthquakes and tsunamis. It frequently

strikes around the world. One important way to prepare is to Drop, Cover, then Hold

On when there is earthquake then Be alert to signs of a tsunami, such as a sudden rise

or draining of ocean waters.
