1. A 30-mm–long center-fed half-wave dipole Wi-Fi antenna operates

at 5 GHz. The dipole is made of copper wire with a radius of 0.5
mm. The conductivity of copper is 5.8 x 107 S/m.

. (a) Determine the radiation efficiency of the antenna.

. (b) What is the antenna gain in decibels?
Partial credit if not in dB.

. (c) What antenna current is required so that the antenna will radiate 100
mW? This is approximately the value for a Wi-Fi router.

. (d) How much power will the generator have to supply to the antenna?

Verifying, wavelength = c/f = 3e8/5e9 = 0.06 m à 30 mm is indeed half-

wavelength.

(a) Radiation efficiency needs Rloss and Rrad. For a half-wave, we
know already that Rrad = 73.2 W. Use the equation sheet to find
Rloss:

("."$ &) )(*×,"/ )(0)×,"-1 )
= = 0.176Ω
()(".* × ,"-. ) *.2×,"1

9$.(
SO: = 0.9976 = x , radiation efficiency.
9$.(:".,9;

(b) The GAIN G = x D; we know directivity for a half-wave
antenna is 1.64, so G = 0.9976 x 1.64 = 1.636. In decibels,
10 log10(1.636) = 2.14 dBi.

(c)Use relation between radiated power and antenna resistance,
current: Prad = ½ I02 Rant = 0.1 W = (0.5) I02 (73.2 W) à 0.0523
A = 52.3 mA.

(d) The generator needs to supply a little more than 100 mW,
based on the efficiency: Ptransmitter x = Prad, so Ptransmitter = Prad/ x
= 100 mW / 0.9976 = 100.24 mW.
