LESSON PLAN IN TECHNOLOGY AND LIVELIHOOD EDUCATION 7

(Agriculture Crop Production)

July 25, 2018

Time Frame: 3 Days

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students shall:
1. state the value of using good seeds
2. discuss the proper selection and storing of good seeds
3. explain the different methods of testing seeds
4. demonstrate and share the proper procedures of testing seeds and computation of the percentage of
seed germinations.

II. Content
A. Topic: Selecting and Testing Seeds
B. Materials: seeds, visual aids, containers/plastic bags, tissue paper, cloth, trays,
Seed box, soil, wafer, bob
C. References
Agriculture Crop Production 7
pp.73
D. Values to be developed
Patience Understanding Dedication

III. Procedure
A. Pre-activity
1. Prayer
2. Checking of attendance
3. Motivation
Present to the class the different variety of seeds. Ask the class to
observe the size, shape, thickness, texture, color and surface of the seeds
in each of the specimens.
4. Unlocking of difficulty
Testa or seed coat — the outer covering
Hilum - small scar usually black or white found at the middle of most
Seeds
Embryo — consist of the plumule (stem)
Radile — primary root
Cotyledons — seeds leaves
Viable — practical
Germinate - grow
Mature – full grown

B. Development of the lesson

1. Presentation
Connect the lesson with the activity of the students.
Day 1
Activity 1
Let the students brainstorm orally with the following questions:
- What are the parts of the seeds?
- How will you determine the good seeds from a bad one?
- Why do we choose good seeds?
- Where can we get the good quality of seed supply?

Activity 2
Lecture/demonstration on the part of the teacher on the proper selection,
storage and testing of seeds, to make the lesson more understandable to the
students.
a The value of good seeds
- Prevents wastage of good seeds and the need to replant.
- Ensures uniformity of plant growth, facilities cultivation and early maturation of crops.
- Insure good quality vegetables and high yield.

b. Proper selection of seeds

- Seeds must be damaged free.
- Seeds must have good germinating ability. Seeds which can germinate and produce
strong, healthy plants are considered viable seeds.
- Seeds should be free from weed mixture.
- Seeds should come from disease-free plants.
- Seeds should be true-to-type, which means that they must be as strong and healthy as
the plant variety from which they come.
c. Proper storage
- Clean, dry and treat with fungicide before storing in a clean, safe container.
- Seeds may be stored in thick plastic bag.
- Some farmers use desiccants or chemicals that absorb moisture from the materials.
d. Methods c/testing seeds
1. Dish method - Line the dish with moistened tissue paper, then place the
prescribe number of seeds. Cover with another sheet o moist tissue paper.
Allow the seeds to germinate for several days. Count the number of seeds that
germinates.
2. Rag — doll method: Count the seeds to be germinated. Then place the seeds
inside a damp piece of cloth. Space the seeds along one side of the cloth so that
the edge of the cloth covers them. The cloth is then rolled and placed on trays.
A piece of stick is placed in the middle of the damp cloth to allow circulation of
air. After three days, count the number of seeds that have germinated.
3. Seed box method: Plant a known number of seeds in seed box and water.
After several days, count the seeds that germinate and compute for the
percentage of germination using this formula:

Percentage of Germination = No. of seeds germinated x 100

No. of seeds sown
*Percentage of germination is also known as percentage of viability.

Activity 3
Plan for a practicum tomorrow in testing seeds.
Day2

Activity 4
Let the students be grouped into 6. Two groups will perform the dish
method of testing, another two groups will do the rag-doll method and the last Iwo
groups will demonstrate on the seed box method Let them follow the following:
Guide Activity:
-Gather and prepare all the needed tools and materials.
-Identify and count the kinds of seeds to be germinated.
- Perform the step-by —step procedure in the seed germination using the different
methods.

Activity 5
a. Let the students prepare and write their observation of the germinated seeds and
compare the rate of germination.
b. Presentation of the observation by group in the class. Let the rest class take down the
important details of the presentation.

Activity 6
Oral Participation:
Use the unfinished sentences to draw ideas from the students:
1. I learned that......
2. I observed that….
3. I realized that…..
4. I recognized that…..

2. Closure

b. Generalization
To ensure high crop yield and good quality vegetables, viable seeds should be
germinated.

c. Application
Let them compute the percentage of seeds that germinate, using the given formula for
them to discover and realize the value of using, selecting, storing and testing of seeds.

IV. Evaluation

V. Assignment

1. Visit nearby garden; interview the caretaker or owner the necessary things in the preparation of the seed
germination. Ask the things to be considered in germinating seeds, Make a written report and share the
results during the class review.

2. Topic: Soil Preparation
