1. A manufacturing company produces steel housings for electrical equipments.

The main
component part of the housing is the steel trough that is made of 14-gauge steel coil. It is
produced using 250 ton progressive punch press with a wipe-down operation that puts two
90 deg. In the flat steel to make the trough. The company requires that the width of the
trough be between 8.31 inches to 8.61inches. At 5% level of significance, is there evidence
that the mean width of the troughs is different from 8.46 inches. Data set : Trough
2. Although many people think they can prepare and put a meal on the table in a short span of
time, but an article reported that they end up spending more that 40 minutes on it. A study
was conducted to check the validity of the article and a sample of 25 people were studied on
the time they took to prepare and cook the dinner. Does the sample data support the claim
of the article at 1 % level of significance? Data set: Dinner.
3. In Intaglio printing, a design or figure is carved beneath the surface of hard metal or stone.
Suppose an experiment is designed to compare the difference in the mean surface hardness
of the steel plates used in intaglio printing( measured in indentation numbers), based on two
different surface- untreated and treated by lightly polishing with emery paper. In the
experiment, 40 steel plates are randomly selected. Is there evidence that the mean surface
hardness on untreated steel plates is more than treated ones at 5%? Data set: Intaglio.
4. A problem with a telephone line that prevents a customer from receiving or making calls is
disconcerting to both the customer and the telephone company. Sample of 20 complaints
received from 2 different offices of Telephone Company and the time to clear these problems
in minutes, from the customers’ lines were recorded. Is there evidence of difference of mean
waiting time between the 2 offices at 1%? Data set: Phone.
5. Multiple Myeloma or blood plasma cancer is characterized by increased blood vessel
formulation in the bone marrow that is predictive factor in survival. One treatment approach
used for multiple myeloma is stem cell transplantation with the patient’s own stem cells. The
data represents the bone marrow micro vessel density for the patients who had a complete
response to the stem cell transplant. The measurements were taken immediately prior to the
stem cell transplant and at the time the complete response was determined. Is there
evidence that the mean marrow micro vessel density is higher before the stem cell
transplant than after the transplant? Data set: Myeloma
6. Over the past year, VP HR at a large medical centre has run a series of 3 month workshops
aimed at increasing worker motivation & performance. To check the effectiveness of the
workshops, she selected a random sample of 35 employees performance rating records
before & after the workshop attendance. Has the performance of the workers increased?
Data set: Perform
7. Students performed a test to check the strength of 4 brands of trash bags. One pound
weights were placed into the bags, one at a time, until the bag broke. A total of 40 bags, 10
of each brand were tested. The data gives the weight (in pound) required to break the trash
bags. Is there evidence of difference in mean strength of the 4 brands of trash bags? Which
brand should you buy? Data set: Trash Bags
8. A hospital conducted a study of the waiting time in its emergency room. The hospital has a
main campus & 3 satellite locations. Management had a business objective of reducing
waiting time for emergency room cases that did not require immediate attention. To study
this, a random sample of 30 emergency room cases that did not require immediate attention
at each location were selected on a particular day, and the waiting time (measured from
check-in to when patient was called into the clinic area) was recorded. Is there difference in
mean waiting time in 4 locations? Data set: ER Waiting.
9. The R&D expenditure and the Net Profits of 54 Pharmaceutical companies is listed in the
datasheet. Fit a regression model to explain R&D expenditure as a function of Net Profit.
Data set: Research.

10. A Manufacturer and marketer of electric motors would like to build a regression model
consisting of five or six independent variables, to predict sales. Past data has been collected
for 50 sales territories, on sales and six different independent variables, viz.

Y= sales in Rs. Lakh in the territory

X1= Market Potential in the territory (in Rs. Lakh)
X2=No. of dealers in the company in the territory
X3= No. of salespeople in the territory
X4=index of competitor activity in the territory on a 5-point scale
(1 = low, 5 = high level of activity by the competitor)
X5= no. of service people in the territory
X6=no. of existing customers in the territory
X7= zone number
Data Set: sales
