Mobile Application for Creating

Content
Activity The teacher will (TTW) go over the basic
information from the fifth grade SOL 5.16
(seen on the right) and make sure that the
students understand what mean, median,
mode, and range represent. TTW will
demonstrate how to determine the best
measure of central tendency for multiple
given data sets. TTW post six groups of five
data sets on the interactive white board
(IWB). The students will not work in groups,
but rather work independently on the data
sets for their normal group number.
The students will (TSW) determine the
mean, median, and mode of five (5) given

data sets using their class set iPads and the
Excel program. TSW create a data table for
their given sets. Once the students have
created their data charts, they will upload

of data; and
d) describe the range of a set of data as a measure
of variation.
The teacher will (TTW) use the SMART Exchange
lesson called Measures of Central Tendency by Brian
McKenzie to introduce the SOL to the class.

(TTW have previously set up the initial Padlet that
the students will enter their data on.) TTW then
pass out individual size bags of M&Ms and each
student will open their bags ad count the quantity of
each color that is in their bag. The students will
separate into six groups of four students.
The students will (TSW) use the Padlet mobile
application to create a list of all candy color counts
for the class. This data will be used to find the
mean, median, mode, and range for each color M&M
in the classroom. Once all of the students have
entered the counts of their individual colors, the

their Excel spreadsheets to Google Sheets
for classroom use. The class will then use all
of the information and the discussion
information to create note cards that will be
used for the SOL prep. TSW use the Quizlet
app on their iPads for this. They can work in
their assigner groups to create fill in the
blank questions and flashcards. They can
also play matching games, trivia games, and
take a test on the flashcards that they
create. These flashcards can then be used at
a later time as an tool to study for their SOL
test when they have completed their
assigned classwork.

group will decide who will find each of the color
total, mean, median, mode, and range for their
assigned group color. The mean, median, mode,
and range will be entered in separate notes under
the color of the appropriate color and the color total
count will be entered in the far-right column under
“Total”. (There are six colors, so each group will be
responsible for a different color.)
TTW then find the percentage of each color
compared to the total count of the class.
