SUPPLY TYPE OR CONSTRUCTED-RESPONSE TYPE OF TEST

- a useful device for testing lower order thinking skills


- the items are consist of a stem and a blank where the students
would write the answer
- it allows only one answer and often test only the students recall of
knowledge
Example:
A device used for magnifying objects that can't be seen by our
naked eye is called_______.

COMPLETION TYPE OF TEST


- in this type of test, testing higher order thinking skills is possible
wherein the questions require not only mere recall of words but also
understanding of words
Example:
1.1 Write an appropriate synonym for each of the following. Each
blank corresponds to a letter.

1.2 Write G if the item on the left is greater than the item on the
right; L if less than; E if equal; and D if the relationship can't be

GUIDELINES FOR THE FORMULATION OF A COMPLETION TYPE OF


TEST

1. Avoid mutilated sentences. Give enough clue to the students.


Example :

2. Avoid giving the students grammatical clues to the desired


response.
Example:
The people who said that the structure of DNA is double helix
were___________.
An______ cell is composed of nucleus.

3. Avoid open-ended item. There should be only one acceptable


answer.
Example :
Edgar Allan Poe wrote ______.

4. The blank should be at the end or near the end of the sentence.
The question must be first stated before the answer.
Example:
The process by which green plants use sunlight to synthesize food is
called _____.

5. Ask question on more significant matter.


Example:
Jose Rizal was born on June __,1865.
Note: There are more significant questions to ask other than specific
dates.

6. The length of the blanks must not suggest the answer. Make it
uniform in size.
Example:
A part of speech that names persons,things,or places is ____.
A part of speech that is used to take the place of a noun is________.

7. Guard against the possibility that one item or part of the test may
suggest the correct response to another item.

8. Avoid extracting the exact phrase in the book as a stem of your


question because it allows memorization.

ESSAY
- it is considered as non-objective test and allow for the asessment
of higher order thinking skills.
- it requires students to organize their thoughts on a subject matter

- it is much longer and complex than short responses but students
are encouraged to remain focused and organized

GUIDELINES FOR THE FORMULATION OF SCORING OF ESSAY TEST

RULE 1. Phrase the direction in such a way that students are guided
on the key concepts to be included.
Example:
Using details and information from the article " Connected but
Alone", summarize the main points of the article. For a complete
response,consider these points:
• its interesting feature (10pts)
• supporting claim (10 pts)
• citing of experience (10pts)

RULE 2. Inform the students on the criteria to be used for grading


their essays. This rule allows the students to focus on relevant and
substantive materials rather than on peripheral and unnecessary
facts and bits of information.
Example:
Write an essay on the topic "Connected but alone" using the
keywords indicated. You will be graded according to the following
criteria:
a. coherence
b. accuracy of statement
c. use of keywords
d. clarity
e. extra points for innovative presentation

RULE 3. Put a time limit on the essay test

RULE 4. Decide on your essay grading system prior to getting the


essays of your students

RULE 5. Evaluate all of the student's answers to one question before


proceeding to the next question

RULE 6. Evaluate answers to essay questions without knowing the


identity of the writer.

RULE 7. Whenever possible, have two or more persons grade each


answer.

RULE 8. Do not provide optional questions.

RULE 9. Provide information about the value/weight of the question


and how it wil be scored.

RULE 10. Emphasize higher level thinking skills.
