His Excellency
Pak Dr Anies Baswedan
Governor of Jakarta

Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb.

Your Excellency,

Humble Request for Courte§y Meeting

I still remember with great fondness and appreciation your kind gesture in meeting students from the
University Scholars Programme of the National University of Singapore. The students took away with them
a number of very useful points and pertinent advice (please see appended two photographs of the event).

2. I am writing however on another very important matter. I would like to request for His Holiness
Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin Saheb to pay you, Pak Anies a courtesy call sometime between 6 and 15
October 2019. His Holiness is the leader of 1.5 million Dawoodi Bohras worldwide, which is a Muslim
community of traders that hail from the state of Gujarat in India. Dawoodi Bohras were once Hindus back
in the 12" century before they converted to Islam, and as such, the Dawoodi Bohras are a community that
has always helped to forge unity beMeen Hindus and Muslims. There are also a number of Dawoodi
Bohras who are Arabs in origin (sometimes called at-mkarma), and they are primarily resident in Yemen.

3. The earliest Dawoodl Bohras in Indonesia can be traced back to the 1880s. Around 900 of them
reside in Indonesia, many of whom are in Bali where there is a mosque which is over 100 years old. The
second biggest Dawoodi Bohra community is domiciled in Jakarta, followed by Surabaya, Palu, Makassar
and Surakarta. From very early on, Dawoodi Bohras have been active contributors to Indonesia’s domestic
economy and society through community service and philanthropy. The Dawoodi Bohras are a relatively
affluent and educated law-abiding community, no matter where they reside, including in Indonesia. The
Dawoodi Bohras in Indonesia are both good Muslims and good citizens of the country.
