Penjelasan “Past Progressive Tense”


Past progressive tense or the more commonly known with the name of the past continuous tense is
indicates continuing action, something that was happening, going on, at some point in the past. The
point Past progressive tense or past continuous tense indicates an ongoing activity, something that's
happened in the past, are happening, or things that occur at specific in the past, or the activity has
been started but not yet finished at that time.

Some functions of past tense progressive or continuous
past include:

Progressive past tense is continuously used to report an


activity that happened at a certain time in the past.
Example: I was shopping today yesterday. (I was shopping
at this hour yesterday).

They are roasting corn at this time last night. (They were
removing corn at this hour last night).

Past progressive tense or continuous past tense is used to


indicate that there is a short past activity (simple past
tense) that occurs in a compilation of several long
duration activities. Subordinate conjunctions "when" or
"while" can be used.
Example: He is sleeping when you call him. (He is sleeping
compilation you call him).

The door knocked while I was studying. (The door


knocked compilation I'm studying).
Past progressive tense or ongoing past tense is used to
mock or criticize activities that occur at random intervals
but are actually a natural habit.
Example: The girl always screams loudly. (The boy always
screams out loud).

My neighbor always chases a stray cat with his broom. (My


neighbors always chase away lying cats with their
brooms).

1. Kalimat positif : S + be (was/were) + present continuous (v-ing)

Contoh :

Dessy was traveling (Dessy sedang berlibur)

The workers were queuing (Para pekerja sedang mengantri)

2. Kalimat negatif : S + be (was/were) + not + present continuous (v-ing)

Contoh :

Dessy was not traveling (Dessy tidak sedang berlibur)

The workers were not queuing (Para pekerja tidak sedang mengantri)

3. Kalimat tanya : be (was/were) + S + present continuous (v-ing)?

Contoh :
Was Dessy traveling (Apakah Dessy sedang berlibur?)

Were the workers queuing? (Apakah para pekerja sedang mengantri?)
