From The Teachers
Thank you so much for all the help and
support that you have already offered during our
first week of school! We have a wonderful group of
children and we are very excited about all the
incredible things they will accomplish this year!
This is the first edition of a weekly
newsletter that will typically come home each
Monday. We will send both paper and electronic
copies to you. If you ever have any questions,
please send us an e-mail, write a note, or give us a
call. We enjoy talking with folks at home and view
communication as an integral part of the learning
process.
Important dates and upcoming events are
always listed below under the “Special News”
section. Make sure to read this section each week
to see what kinds of events/activities will be
happening over the next few weeks.
One such event is our Welcome Night.
There will be two sessions held this Thursday. The
first will be held from 6:05-6:35 pm in the 4th grade
rooms (22 and 23). The second session will be from
6:40-7:10 in the same rooms. We will hold joint
sessions for 4th grade parents since we will be
working collaboratively as a team. We will explain
the 4th grade curriculum, how we plan to teach it,
give you a chance to check out the rooms and
answer questions. We hope to see you there!

Social Studies/Science
This year we will once again be team
teaching science and social studies to all 4th grade
students. Mr. Finger will be teaching science and
Mrs. Schefke will be incorporating technology
lessons into her social studies units. We will both
work collaboratively on our Economics unit to
combine aspects of both science and social
studies.
Math
Students begin math instruction this week.
Unit 1 focuses on place value and gives information
about student needs and how we can differentiate
to meet those needs in following units. The first
unit will be done in homeroom classes. Starting
with unit 2, students will move between classrooms.
The flexible groups will change every few
weeks as we begin new units of instruction, or if the
need to make adjustments should arise during a
particular unit.
Reading
We will be taking time to administer one-
on-one reading assessments/reading sessions this
week to get to know where each student is in
his/her literacy development. Literacy instruction is
another area in which we will be team-teaching.
Next week all students in the district will be
taking AIMSWEB assessments to give us additional
information about how to meet student needs.
Spelling and instruction through our
Reading Street literacy program will begin next
week. There will not be spelling words this week.
Initially, all students will have the same spelling list
but that will quickly become differentiated.
Writing
Students will kick off the year with some
engaging writing activities to get our students
excited about writing and motivated to write at
school. Students will write about a variety of topics
and will practice writing techniques they have
learned in years past.
