From The Teachers
It was wonderful to see many of you during
Welcome Night last week! Curricular materials are
available on our website to ensure that you have
access to the standards throughout the year.
This will be the first week that students
have spelling words. This is also the only week that
most of the words will be the same for all students.
Words are written in student planners and will be
used in assignments both in and out of class. The
spelling test will be administered this Friday.
Please remember to send a healthy snack
each day or let us know if your child will need one
provided. We welcome any additional snack
donations to help ensure all children have
something to eat.
Keep an eye out for book order forms
coming home soon! Class codes are available on
our website.
We will be sending out information about
Parent/Teacher conferences next week, but we
included the dates in the “Special News” box so that
you could plan accordingly for childcare.

Social Studies/Science
Science instruction will use paper airplanes
as a tool to introduce students to scientific method
and how to apply it in order to learn more about the
world around us.
Social studies instruction will focus on an
introduction to geography. We will begin to discuss
location in terms of relative and absolute location.
Math
Students will continue to work on concepts
from Unit 1. Concepts covered this week will
include place value, rounding, comparing larger
numbers, and how to interpret data sets.
Students are learning how to use some of
the tools available on our classroom website. The
address is listed on the black bar with the date on
the top line of this newsletter.
Mastering multiplication and division facts
is a process we will work on throughout the year.
Reading
We will continue to administer running
records this week in order to build a more complete
picture of each child’s literacy needs. We will also
be gathering information about the spelling needs
of students in order to create spelling groups.
We will begin Unit 1, week 1 of our
Reading Street Reading program this week.
Students will read a selection from the story
“Because of Winn-Dixie”. Our focal comprehension
strategies this week are using sequencing (putting
events in order) and summarizing (retelling the
important parts in your own words) the text to help
increase understanding for the reader.
Writing
The kids are working on developing the
building blocks for their own novels. These include
flushing out details about main characters, their
backstories, settings and mapping out problems
and events that will take place later in the story.
