ROTATING LESSONS- SPELLING, HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, VISUAL ARTS

This term, the rotating lesson structure will continue enabling students to gain valuable
learning experiences with teachers in their specialised areas. Troy Irvin will be teaching
Geography, and Glenda Niven’s will be taking up her usual history role after returning from
long service leave. I will be taking Visual Arts where we will be working on different art
techniques and principles. The spelling rotation will also continue, to ensure students are
provided with appropriate challenges to succeed.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING
As part of getting students to be independent learners and high school ready, I would
encourage all students to participate in reading at home. The class will have the opportunity
to borrow weekly from the library but they may wish to read books/texts from home also.
In addition to reading, while there is no formally set homework, I would expect that
students are working on their set assignments at home so they are completed to a high
standard. As well as assignment work all students have access to a range of programs online
which complement, enhance and reinforce many of the concepts we cover in class. I
encourage all students to take advantage of these programs and use them at home as part
of their independent learning. I would highly recommend Maths Online as it closely follows
the curriculum and our work in class.

BEHAVIOUR

We have successfully implemented a classroom system which aims to promote social and
personal responsibility and reflect students’ schooling into a “real life” setting. Through
attendance, organisation and work completed, students earn fictional money which they can
use to buy things form a classroom catalogue. This also teaches the skills of budgeting and a
need vs want buying strategy. This system takes into consideration aspects of business and
economy, a key area of the Australian Curriculum.

This term we have implemented another behavior policy which aims to reward the students
who are showing the schools five values and presenting positive behaviors at school. There
is a step system that can be compared to a traffic light, the red zone, being poor behavior
and the green zone being good behavior. The students that are not in the red zone at the
end of the week will then have the opportunity to participate in a range of Friday activities
that we will be doing this term.
