From The Teachers
This Wednesday will be fall
festival/Halloween celebrations at school. The kids
may bring costumes to school to wear in the
parade. If toy weapons are a part of your child’s
costume, we ask that you please leave these items
at home. DO NOT have your child come to school
in his/her costume. The morning will be a regular
day of school and students will have time to put on
their costumes, if they choose to wear one. The
afternoon schedule is listed below in the “Special
News” section. Parents are welcome to help
children put on costumes between 2:20 and 2:40.
This Friday is our field trip to the Capitol
Building and Michigan Historical Museum!
Chaperones aren’t needed for the Capitol tour but
parents who work at or near the Capitol are
welcome to come say hi during the tour. The tour is
from 9:30-10:30. Our bus will then take us to the
Michigan Historical Museum for self-guided tours
from 11-1:15. This is the part that we need
chaperones for. Chaperones should meet us at the
museum at 10:45 to get information and groupings.

Social Studies/Science
We didn’t get to creating our fossils last
week but will do so this week. Students continue to
use electronic simulations to look at the relationship
between environmental factors, time and
organisms.
Students will be preparing to make the
most of our field trip this Friday and identifying
questions they have about our state.
Math
Students will be multiplying 2-digit by 2 and
3-digit numbers this week. The concept is tricky for
some students and will likely require patience and
practice on the part of parents and teachers alike.
Writing out the parts of the problem that are
being multiplied and then putting those parts back
together is helpful for many students. For example,
in 46X37, you could break it down into (7x6, 7x40,
30x6 and 30x40). This allows students to use the
“zeros trick” to keep track of place value.
Reading
We are on unit 2, week 2 of our Reading
Street reading program.
The spelling test will be given on Thursday
this week due to our field trip on Friday. Given
Halloween in Wednesday, it would be a good idea
to study earlier in the week.
Spelling lists should be written in the
planner. A 3-hole punched copy is provided to
each student on Monday and all students are asked
to write these in their planner.
Writing
We are working on stringing together the
events of our novels in a logical sequence that
builds suspense as the plot develops.
Ask your child to tell you about his/her story
and what is going to happen. Asking questions
about the story forces the students to think about
the plot and how/why things take place.
