2
The Present Simple is a verb tense in which actions are described periodically, in which real
events are described.

Basic rules to use the present simple in English.

Examples:

• I travel to London every weeks.

• They run in the park every Saturdays.
• My mother cleans the house
• You are a good student.
• Mary works in a bank.
• John walks to his office.
• You study English at school.
• The dog breaks the fence.
• The car is in the garage.

3
• My father has a nice coat.

TO START THE EXPLANATION, LET'S SEE THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLE:

I go to the school every day

The conjugation of verbs in the present is very simple, the important thing is to be careful with
the third person singular (he, she, it). Let's see some examples of verbs to conjugate.

I eat read have study

You eat read have study
He eats reads has studies
She eats reads has studies
It eats reads has studies
We eat read have study
They eat read have study

1. When the verb ends in "s, sh, ch or x" you must add an "e" and then the "s":
• Watch = watches (look).
• Smash = smashes (star).
• Catch = catches (grabs).
• Fix = fixes.
2. When the verb ends in "o", the ending "es" is also added:
• Go = goes (va).
• Do = does (does).
3. When the verb ends in "y", preceded by a consonant, we have to change the "y" to "i",
and then add "es":
• Fly = flies (fly).
• Study = studies (studies)

4
USES OF THE PRESENT SIMPLE
1. To express facts or general truths:
The Sun heats the atmosphere = The sun warms the atmosphere.
2. To talk about habits and routines.
In these cases we find words that indicate the frequency with which an action is performed
or an adverb of frequency such as: "everyday", "usually", "always", etc.
