PAPER CHROMATOGRAHPY
The Paper chromatography is a technique in chemistry which is used for identifying and
separating colored mixtures like pigments. The color rise up along with the solvent. The objective of this
experiment is to separate the different pigments of ink.
Materials
Ruler Tape
Water Alcohol
Procedures:
1. Draw a line onto the 3 pieces of chromatography paper with each of 3 different colors.
2. Roll the upper portion of the paper with the pencil and secure it with tape.
3. Pour small amount of water and alcohol separately into different plastic cups.
4. Place the 3 pieces of chromatography paper paper into the 3 different plastic cup.
5. Measure the maximum distance travelled by the water and each different pigment starting at
the line drawn on the paper.

INK COLOR (in) (cm)
BLUE 1.5 2.4
YELLOW GREEN 1.6 1.8
ORANGE 1.4 2
CONCLUSION:
Upon performing the activity, we observed that the solvent water that we used rise faster in the
chromatography paper. The average time of water is 1.5 while the alcohol is 2.06 (Performed in 2
minutes)
FLAME TEST
MATERIALS
Procedures
Experiment Conclusions
1. Is it the metal or the non-metal that produces the flame test color? What brought you to this
conclusion?
- It is the metal because when you heat an atom some of its electrons are “excited” to higher
energy levels, when electron drops from one level to a lower energy level it emits a
quantum of energy.
2. The identity of the unknown metal (it is one of the metals you tested.)
3. Show the calculations for the preparation of the three solutions.
SOLUTION COLOR
Heat + Oxygen + Fuel + Sodium Chloride Light Red
Heat + Oxygen + Fuel + copper sulfate Blu green
Heat + Oxygen + Fuel + Unknown Red
Heat + Oxygen + Fuel + barium chloride Yellow
Conclusion:
4. How does the flame test investigation relate to the engineering design process?
As an Engineering student the flame test has its significant for us. The flame test is part of the
research phase of the engineering design process, it is important so that an engineer will
understand problems involving science and mathematics.
