CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Title Selection

When people worked on certain companies, data is a key resource that
plays an important role in the continuity and development of the company, data is
the most important thing that must be maintained the continuity. That is why it
requires hard disk cloning, to make backup or backup data which is the copy of
the original data. The main purpose is to maintain the possibility of loss data due
to certain causes in the future or also to use the cloned results in other media so it
can be use as the original data.
Cloning the operating system is to back up, installed operating system
along with its driver and its application into a fail image, which will be used in the
future, when the operating system is in trouble, need to be reinstall or to use on
other computers / laptops with the similar type. The advantage gained compared
to manually installing is more faster cloning process compared to the manual
installation process, other advantages are easier and less hassle.

1.2 Scope of Issues

In this section, I, as the writer, will discuss about several problem while
cloning the hard drive.
1. Knowing what is hard disk cloning.
2. Knowing what software used for cloning hard disk.
3. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of using a cloning system.
4. Knowing the equipments used in cloning hard disk.

of ferrite in a raw material. Advance technology in NDT makes Inspection
to be faster, precise and reliable.

2. Heat Treatment
Welding Pre Heat is advanced automated system control and document
welding pre heat to reduce thermal stress in three primary ways. First, it
drives off moisture that would release hydrogen that could penetrate the
steel and cause porosity and subsequent cracking second, it reduces heat
loss to surrounding metal, minimalizing the rate of weld hardening and
allowing hydrogen that is present to escape. And finally, it improves the
microstructure and durability of heat-affected zone.
Post Weld Heat Treatment is carefully controlled Post Weld Heat
Treatment (PWHT) is a crucial step in maximizing the life of your process
equipment. PWHT tempers the metal and reduces tensile stress,
minimizing the risk of brittle fracture, stress and corrosion cracking and
metal fatigue. This is especially important for equipment in harsh service
environments.

3.1 General Theory

1. Definition of Hard Disk Cloning
Disk cloning is also known as ghost imaging, the process of copying
the contents of one computer hard disk to another disk or to an image file.
This may be done straight from one disk to another, but more often, the
contents of the first disk are written to an image file as an intermediate
step, then the second disk is loaded with the contents of the image.
Typically, this is done for archiving purposes, to restore lost or damaged
data or to move wanted data into a new disk, though other reasons also
exist.
Unlike standard copying functions, disk cloning involves copying
hidden and in-use files and thus presents special challenges, as those types
of files are typically not available for copying. Additional complications
arise when the process is used for networked computers, as the network
must be able to distinguish between different computers. Post-cloning
operations may be necessary to address these and other issues.

2. Advantages and Disadvantages of Hard Disk Cloning

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of hard disk cloning :
a. Advantages of Hard Disk Cloning
1) Fast, more practical and more saving time, because it can
install windows to a computer with just a matter of minutes.
2) Easier in doing maintenance of a computer that connected to
network.
3) More efficient when having network problems, because if one
computer is exposed to a virus then it can be reinstalled with
the OS backup that has been cloned.

8
9

b. Disadvantages of Hard Disk Cloning

1) If in the process of cloning the hard disk there is a driver that
does not match then it must be reinstalled.
2) To perform cloning process requires at least two hard disk with
the same size. If we clone into a larger destination hard disk,
then the rest of the size in the destination hard disk will be
unlocated.
3) To run a cloning process, two computers that have the same
specifications is required. Starting from type, and brand
mainboard.
4) This system can shorten the usage life.

3.2 Software Required

1. EaseUS Todo Back Up Tool Definition
EaseUS Disk Cloning is a Bootable CD that provides facilities for
hardisk or partition sector per sector without looking at the operating
system, file system and partitioning scheme. With the sector by sector
copy feature, it will ensure the copy will be same as the original. So,
EaseUS Disk Cloning can be used to copy, clone or upgrade existing
systems on a small hard drive to a new hard drive with a larger size. All
data will be copied, including files that have been deleted, files that are
lost and those that are not accessed.

Picture 3.1 EaseUS Todo

10

EaseUs helps us to clone an old hard disk to a new one, clone a small
hard disk to a large one and clone HDD to SSD.

2. EaseUS Features
Here are the features in cloning hard disk using EaseUS :
a. Save Hark Disk Drive (HDD) Image, HDD to other HDD from
local HDD, to different external HDD.
b. Save partition, Partition to backup partition and Partition Hacks
(Change the route to where the partition is returned).
c. Sector by sector copy.
b. Supported with IDE, SATAI, SATAII, SCSI, Firewire (IEEE1394)
and USB drives.
c. Supported with Dynamic Disk, Inaccessible Disk Copy and
Booting from CD ROM.
d. User-friendly interfaces.
e. Relay disk space facility, if the destination hard disk space isn’t
enough.

2.3 Work Steps

These are the following steps in cloning a hard disk:
1. Requirement that need to be prepared before cloning hard disk
Before cloning we have to prepare some things for the cloning process
to run smoothly without any interference or incompleteness tool.
a. Prepare a Reference Computer
Prepare a computer / laptop. Make sure the EaseUS software has
been installed in the computer, if not, then burn the CD that
contains EaseUS software into the refrence computer.
11

b. Prepares 2 External and Internal Hard Drives

Picture 3.2 Secondary HDD

To use EaseUS, we need two hard drives. The first hard disk is the
source (internal hard disk) and the second hard disk is the
destination (external hard disk).
c. Prepare a HDD Docking Station / HDD Converter

Picture 3.3 HDD Docking Station

2. Steps of Cloning Hard Disk
Here are the steps of cloning hard disk using clonezilla and 1 external
hard disk :
1) First, connect the destination hard disk into the HDD Docking
Station or the HDD Converter, then connect the HDD Docking Station
or the HDD Converter into the computer/laptop USB port.
12

2) Then, after the reference computer has been connected with the
destination hard disk, Launch EaseUS disk cloning software.

3) Then, click Clone.

Picture 3.5 Appearance of EaseUS Software

13

4) The next step is that we choose the cloning mode. There are two
mode of cloning, Disk Mode and Partition Mode. The disk mode
cloning will clone the entire disk, while partition cloning only clone
one partition to another partition. So, we choose Disk Mode, then
choose Disk 0 as source disk, click Next.

Picture 3.6 Choosing Cloning Mode

5) Then, choose Disk 2 as the destination disk and click Next.

17) Then, you can eject the destination disk and connect into a
computer or laptop that does not have an operating system (OS), set
boot in BIOS via hard disk, then it will automatically doing the OS
installation, the process will be faster than installing manually.
