This research was conducted to determine the causes of depression of the high school
students and its effect in their academic performance in school. Being a student is very hard, it's
to prioritize your study first before other stuffs. It's not that all students can do time managing so
some of them gets depressed over solving their own problems and passing requirements in
deadline. The researchers used the descriptive quantitative method to know and find the result
of high school students' opinions or answers through the survey.

CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

INTRODUCTION

People normally suffer in many problems every day. They said, you’re not a human if you never
experience having problems in your life. It is so common for us to face this kind of situation but being
too problematic is not that good for us too.

This research is all about the causes of depression of the students and their effects to the
students. Depression can change many things and situations, even people. Some reasons of having
this mood are problems about family, friends, school works, and financial problem. This is a common
problem of some people whenever they are facing challenges. Depression affects a person’s mood,
thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and physical health.

This kind of mood or feeling will lead us in many dangerous ways. We might hurt ourselves or
everyone in our surroundings. It means, depression can make our lives miserable if we won’t give
attention to solve this kind of problem.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The term depression describes a group of conditions characterized by significant and

sustained periods of low mood, associated with a syndrome, or group, of accompanying
characteristics and symptoms. In addition to the “blue” or melancholy mood, a depressive episode is
defined by disturbances of at least four other psychological and physical processes, such as appetite,
sleep, energy, concentration, interest, and the ability to experience pleasure. Some forms of
depression are so severe that the student may become completely incapacitated, hallucinate or
develop

1
delusions. Students with such severe depressions clearly appear unwell, they may be slow in action
and thought, or restless, nervously pacing, and picking at their skin or nails. Their posture is often
slumped, and their faces marked by down-turned mouth, lowered gaze, and furrowed brow. On the
other hand, milder forms of depression can involve such subtle changes in appearance and behaviour
that a suffering students may not be sure anything is wrong. Even so, these milder forms of
depression can take a toll on schoolwork performance, home life, and overall well-being. Some
depressed students are not even aware of their low mood. Instead, they may complain of “burnout” or
stress, feeling perpetually tired, or inexplicably losing their enthusiasm. Pessimism is a hallmark of
depression, it can make the student seem indecisive, irritable, or less confident in their abilities.
Underperformance and absenteeism negatively affect the workplace. Performance in social roles as a
student. Chores go undone, formerly enjoyable hobbies and social activities diminish, and even
attention to grooming may decrease. Recent surveys have shown that depression has an effect on
the student’s academic performance. Thoughts of death are common in depression, and most
depressed people experience at least passive thoughts of suicide that is, thinking about it without
taking action. Across a lifetime, more than of depressed students will make an attempt, such as
cutting their wrists or drinking alcohol, and some of them make their life miserable. Depression also
frequently accompanies the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The first lifetime episode of
depression follows a significant loss, such as a romantic rejection or a failure at home or school.
Having strong and supportive family may help buffer student against the effects of such adversity. The
treating Depression Episodes of major depression range in duration from a few weeks to years.
Without treatment, most uncomplicated depressions will remit spontaneously within one year. For the
majority of students, therefore, the benefits of effective treatment are reduced time of illness and
diminished suffering.

3
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main thrust of this study is to determine causes of depression of students in Jose P. Laurel High
School and it’s affect to academic performance in school.

1. What is depression of the High School students in terms of?

1.1 Age;

1.2 Gender and;

1.3 Strand?

2. What are the causes of depression?

3. How depression affects students’ everyday life?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Every year, Most of the people encountered depression in many reasons. Everyone cause
suffer in this kind of feeling or mood, even kids or teenagers. And it can affect in our surroundings.
This study would give everyone some precautions or guides of how to avoid this kind of problem.
Almost, this study is also targeting of how can peoples control their depression and how not to involve
their surroundings. Some examples are our family and study. We can’t focus on them because of this
depression we’re suffering.

Furthermore, the study could give a probable explanation of how to avoid this problem so that it
can’t affect our surroundings and make the conflicts bigger. And also, it can help other depressed
people of how to run from this kind of situation step by step

4
SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The study investigates the causes of depression in high school students and their effects to
their academic performance. The study includes what traumatic problems they experienced to suffer
in this kind of mood. Furthermore, this study contains some ways to prevent having depression or to
stop being depressed. The study also wrote about the result of the students’ academic performance.
The depression of a student can affect their surroundings especially their school duties. So the
researchers include the different effects of depression in our surroundings especially at school and
exclude the effects of depression in a family.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES AND LITERATURE

This chapter shows facts, principles, essential parts and the research stage of the study from
other resources. The researcher has undergone clarifying the differences of variables being studied. It
also allows the researchers to compare and contrast their findings with those of past studies.

LOCAL LITERATURE

Depression is chosen as a research topic with which to initiate an advocacy for the students'
plight, because the mood disorder has been consistently reported as a major and serious problem for
university students as a whole. Moreover, it is an unexplored area for research in the Philippines. So,
it is very significant to study about this because it is the only way to prevent our country or students in
our country. We can't let ourselves, students, to be one of the percentages of depressed people all
over the world. Thirteen social and demographic characteristics (ie, sex, age category, course
category, year level, nationality, religion, smoking, drinking, having a love relationship, level of
satisfaction with one’s financial condition, organizational membership, level of closeness with parents,
and level of closeness with peers) were analyzed for their associations with higher levels of
depressive symptoms. Those are the common classified causes of depression. It is pointing out that
even a tiny reason can affect one's daily life, it'll let your normal life miserable if you'll not find for its
own solution.

7
FOREIGN LITERATURE

"Depression, a leading cause of disability and a major source of the burden of disease
worldwide" (WHO, 2001) is common among international university students" ( Oluwafunmilola, 2012
). It pointed out that being depressed even if you're just a student is just a common case. It is only
means that there are too many problematic students outside our country than Filipino students.
"Research involving Korean international students in Australia suggested that individuals with
depressive symptoms are those having lower levels of social connectedness and academic self-
efficacy." ( Mak and Kim, 2011). Being unfamiliar with your surroundings and adjusting to your new
environment isn't that easy. So according to the information, it is pointed out that being foreign will
cause depression, too. And it will lead that depressed student's academic performances be in danger.
Too much stress, problems, and also being bullied will case depression to everyone.

LOCAL STUDIES
Depression is a common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest
or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor
concentration.4,5 It usually occurs as a result of adverse life events, such as: losses of a significant
person, object, relationship or health, but it can also occur due to no apparent cause.4 These
problems can become chronic or recurrent and lead to substantial impairments in an individual's
ability to take care of his or her every day responsibilities.6 Mood disorders are treatable conditions,
with each type requiring different treatment approaches and modalities. Antidepressant medications
and psychotherapies offer useful treatment approaches and are commonly employed in treating the

8
debilitating effects of depression. If mood disorders like depression are left untreated for long periods
of time, the debilitating effects of depression cause unnecessary suffering that intervenes with
people’s daily-life activities.

FOREIGN STUDIES

A host of research conducted across the globe over the past couple of years show that
actually, depression and anxiety are serious health issues found in every society in the world. In two
separate studies from 2012 of anxiety disorders and clinical depression, researchers at The University
of Queensland examined surveys of clinical anxiety and depression conducted across 91 countries,
involving more than 480,000 people. The research revealed that, in fact, people in Western countries
are least likely to be depressed, while those in some parts of Asia and the Middle East are most likely
to be depressed. About 9% of people have major depression in Asian and Middle Eastern countries,
such as India and Afghanistan, compared with about 4 percent in North and South America, Australia,
New Zealand, and East Asian countries including China, Thailand, and Indonesia, according to the
research, which appeared as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study, 2012.The studies further
found that both major depression is found more commonly in women than in men. While clinical
depression is common throughout a person’s lifespan, there is even evidence that shows that the
occurrence of anxiety and depression are linked, that they often come hand in hand. Another
interesting article on the relationship between anxiety and depression argues that depression and
anxiety “almost always” go together. According to the article, which quotes the statistics of the largest
survey taken in the United States, called the National Comorbidity Survey, more than half of patients
diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) also have had an anxiety disorder.

9
ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY
The researcher expects that this study would help those students who are suffering in
depression, and to those people who is associated with someone who has depression. They might
notice that the person is suffering in depression because of his/her posture or physical appearance
and they are the one who can give help to the student to recover.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

In order to understand the subject matter clearly, these are the following key concepts:

depression- serious medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and

unimportant and often is unable to live in a normal way

mood- a conscious state of mind or predominant emotion

physical health- is critical for overall well-being and is the most visible of the various

dimensions of health, which also include social, intellectual, emotional,

spiritual and environmental health.

CHAPTER 3

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This chapter presents the discussion on the research methodology of the study, the subjects,
the sampling technique, research instruments, procedure of the data gathering and statistical
treatment that will be used for accurate data analysis and interpretation.

METHODS USED IN STUDY

The research will use the descriptive method of research. A qualitative study fails on the
descripted method where in a questionnaire was used in gathering facts. In the descriptive methods,
the research employed the survey methods, which is an organized attempt to analyze, interpret the
perception of the students in Jose P. Laurel.

Through the generosity of the research, the researcher will able to conduct the survey with in
one sitting only all of the questions will explained to the respondents clearly with a short introduction
about the significance of the study before they proceed in answering the questionnaire.

10
RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
The study has a prospective respondent throughout this school. It focused on the causes and
effects of depression on the academic performance of the high school students who served as
respondents and subject of this study. All the students are respondents of this study which means that
they voluntary answered the questionnaire that the researchers gave them. Moreover, the
respondents covered the 1st year to 4th year students who actively participated in the study. However,
the experimental procedure conducted by the researchers did not include all the high school students.
In order to become clear, it would be discussed under the sampling technique used by the
researchers.

11
DATA GATHERING USED
The researchers made an equal number of survey papers every grade level in Jose P. Laurel
High School. To make the distribution of questionnaires easy and faster, the researchers decided to
give divide each other a survey papers. Every member will be given a questionnaire to distribute for
every grade level students that is assigned to him/her. The researchers didn't just hand over the
survey papers. The distributor of that questionnaire should explain their objectives and reasons for
making this survey. They made some short interview about depression and for the respondent to feel
comfortable to the researcher. Researchers should answer all questions from the respondent
regarding survey, it is for the respondent to understand and answer the questions correctly. Lastly,
after filling up all the questions in survey paper, the researcher should pay respect to the respondent
for giving enough time and effort answering the paper. Every member of researchers that distributed
the survey papers gave the respondents a simple appreciation for cooperating to the survey.

INSTRUMENTS USED
In this study the researchers used different materials and instruments. These are the following
materials used in the study; papers for survey (respondents) interview questions (researchers), pens,
notes, folders, envelopes and a computer for different references such as facts and some information
about depression that researchers needed for this study.

12
STATISTICAL TREATMENT
We will analyze the data we gathered using the following statistical measures
a. Percentage P=fx100/N
This will be used to determine what is the statistical rate of the student.
Where f=frequency of scores
N=total of number of respondents
P=percentage
b. Arithmetic Mean= X
N
Where X= data
N=respondents
c. Range of the result
In the analysis of data, the following range of like scales were used.
Yes= 3.5 – 5.0
No= 1.5 - 3.4
Undecided= 0.5 – 1.4

Chapter 4
PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
This chapter interprets and presents the data, it was analyzed during the research process which
is relevant to the study. The data are presented in the use of tabular and textual forms and analyzed
to answer the questions given in the statement of the problem as indicated in Chapter 1. It also shows
the profile of respondents such as age, gender, and their year levels. The data was analyzed by
showing the frequency and percentage every distribution tables of students' profile and questions in
the survey.

1. Profile of the Respondents

For a complete understanding of the study, the respondents' profile was included; age, year
level, and gender. The profile provides enough Information so that we will able to know their ability
and concerns about the study.

1.1 Age is one factor considering the knowledge of the respondents. We will able to answer in
what age does the students' depression attacks them.

Chapter 5
Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

SUMMARY
Students who suffered or still suffering from depression surely had different reasons how they
end up in that situation. And the effect of that problem on their academic performance is the study's
purpose. The researchers should find out what are the most mentioned reason and effects for having
this traumatic experience on the students of Jose P. Laurel High School.

The study needs students' opinions and answers to achieve the purpose. We're aiming for
students' answers so we gave each of them surveys that can answer all the questions provided in the
study. We gave same amount of survey papers to each two grade levels.

As the study gathered all the answered survey papers from the selected students, we prepared
tables for each question mentioned in the survey and we included the respondents' profile such as
age, gender, and their year level. This study presented a tabular and textual data to easily identify the
result of the survey we gathered from the students.

CONCLUSIONS

The researchers conclude that most of the people who experiencing depression are teenagers,
because in this generation teenagers are very vulnerable. And the worst is the teenagers are
imprudent, they will do whatever they want without any permission to their parents.
The researchers conclude that family is the main reason of their depression. Family because
some parents are too busy to their works and they not give time to their children. And some family
have some personal issues like financial problem, broken family, and bad habits.
The study clarifies that those people who experiencing depression need an advice and a
comfort to those people that’s concern to them especially in their family and love ones. The
researchers also discovered that not all depressed people are thinking to end their lives. Because
there’s a lot of reason to live and ending their lives is not a solution.

RECOMMENDATION
People get easily affected by depression. It depends on what they've experienced from the
past. Depression can kill people and that's the worst thing that depression can do. But there are still
hopes to surpass this kind of mood. It depends on the victim if he/she wants to be fine, they should
cooperate and help themselves. Base on our survey question, there are some questions that can lead
you to defeat depression.

Some people's reason is loneliness, they can't socialize with other people. So, the researchers
recommended to be more socially active. Be with your friends so that you'll never feel loneliness that
will lead you in a depression. When you have your friends, you can express your feelings, too. It's
better to throw all your bad feelings out than keeping them because it might stress yourselves. Being

In additional, remain healthy and keep your emotions balanced. Never forget to put your
