1. The beam AB supports two concentrated loads P and Q (Fig. 1). The normal stress due to
bending on the bottom edge of the beam is +55 MPa at D and +37.5 MPa at F. (a) Draw the
shear and bending-moment diagrams for the beam. (b) Determine the maximum normal stress
due to bending and maximum shear stress that occurs in the beam.

2. Beam AB is made of three planks glued together and is subjected, in its plane of symmetry, to
the loading shown in Fig. 2. Determine the maximum normal stress and shear stress in the
beam.

3. For the beam and loading shown (Fig. 3), determine the minimum required width b, knowing
that for the grade of timber used, allowable normal stress = 12 MPa and allowable shear stress =
825 kPa.
