As an incoming 5th year mechanical engineering student, in our

curriculum it is required to enroll the “On the job training (OJT)” which is

required to find a company that we can be an intern. Once we in a company we

need to comply with our required number of hours needed, which is 250 hours

in our curriculum.

I was accepted in the Department of Public Works and Highways

Quezon Area Equipment Management Section (DPWH – QAES) located at

Dalahican Road Lucena City, Quezon. I saw there the oldest DPWH equipment

steam road roller model that is 118 years old. My internship training started at

June 03, 2019 until July 19, 2019 every weekdays from 8:00am to 5:00pm. We

are held by our head supervisor Engr. Ramon C. Maguyon Jr. (Engineer III) of

Equipment Management Section. One of our supervisor sir Edilberto Merjilla

(Auto. Equipment Inspector II) explained to us the contract and our

responsibilities during our internship in DPWH – QAES.

Our work there is automotive maintenance. All of the broken equipments

of the DPWH like dump trucks, cars, and heavy equipments are taken here for

repair and maintenance and for those that cannot be fix anymore are taken to

the junk yard. In my early days of work experience in the company I faced

how to maintain and repair a six – piston engine of a dump truck and

identifying the parts of the engine. Also, cleaning the air conditioning unit and

identifying its parts and what is the refrigerant being used in the unit. One of

the task given to us is to disassemble and cleaning the parts of a four piston
engine and identifying its parts and function like the crankshaft, barbola, piston

heads, etc. Also understanding the thermodynamic cycles behind the Diesel

and Otto cycle. I also learned about the firing order of an engine, if it is

American and Japanese made.

After the disassembling, cleaning, and lubrication of the parts, we are

now ready to assemble and to enable it to function. As we get closer to our goal

we experienced some difficulties because it won’t sustain its power to.

Afterwards a series of troubleshooting took place to the engine to make it

finally worked and sustain its power throughout a test conducted by our

foreman. Through teamwork anything can be achieved even the toughest

problems given to us.

Some of problems encountered during our OJT in DPWH – QAES are

lacking of special tools, for an example like when the bearings in the chassis

are circled because of the rust, using a special tools to removes the circled

bearings to avoid any damage to the chassis. They improvised some tools to be

special tools but the cost is the chassis is damaged. Another problem

encountered is there is only work when there is to be fix equipment. Another

problem encountered is there we are too many, we are 24 inters in DPWH –

QAES our supervisors cannot focus to us because we are too many to handle.

Because of this problems our chief engineer made us some assignments to

research about topics that can help us to be aware in our field. These researches

is to be submitted to our chief engineer.
