Cardinal Rules or Principles of Arnis

1. Respect for one’s opponent as a person and as a fighter, and as a sportsman.


2. Always remember that an opponent is a human being with a dignity as you have a worthy or
respect.
3. Sportsmanship on the other hand is a measure of a fighter or a player.
4. The laurels of victory should never be worn with superiority but with humility.
5. Victory is not a stamp of invulnerability but rather a reason for magnanimity.

Fundamental Skills

 GRIP- (the soul of all fighting techniques in Arnis), 3 inches away from the bottom of cane
(28-30 inch)
 SALUTATION OR PUGAY- sign of respect to opponent and coach
 STANCES- proper stance and posture to master other skills

Types of Stances

1. Attention Stance or formal stance- feet together in 45 degree, hold stick w/ both
hands
2. Open leg stance- stand straight, legs spread about shoulder width
3. Straddle leg stance- spread legs beyond S width, bend knees and the weight are on
both legs
4. Forward stance or fighting stance- right leg frwrd w/ bent knee. Left leg at back be
straight, cane in center and fighting form
5. Backward stance- left leg back, slight bend trunk and left leg, arms and hands in
fighting form
6. Oblique forward/ backward stance- front leg oblique forward, arms and hands in
fighting form

Qualities of Good Arnis Player

 TECHNIQUES- fundamental skills and knowledge of arnis basics like strikes, counter attacks,
etc.
 ALERTNESS AND AWARENESS- keenness of mind and reflexes, sensitive to envi or
situation
 COORDINATION AND CONCENTRATION- bod and mind work together
 SPEED- quick reaction and total body movement. Lighting speed.
 POWER- necessary to knock down opponent
 TIMING- exact time hitting of the target. Anticipation of the movement is necessary.
 PROPER DELIVERY OF STRIKES- learn effective blow, kick, contact of stick
 ENDURANCE AND STAMINA- withstand pressure for long period of time w/o fatigue
 DETERMINATION- will to win and dedication to fight at your best
 CONFIDENCE- properly carry himself inside and outside the arena
 YELLING- expression of power and courage
