WORK TEAM COMMUNICATION

A business team that uses effective communication techniques will see much more
success than a team that lacks communication skills. Team communication should start with the
manager--through training programs and seminars--and is one of the most important aspects of
business success. Without the necessary communication skills, even the most talented and
knowledgeable team member probably won't see as much success as that of a less-talented,
better communicator. Whether giving a presentation or listening to one of your coworkers talk in
a meeting, several communication techniques will help you command respect, promote
positivity and improve team success.

Steps in work team communication:

Step 1
Listen before speaking. The first and most important step in practicing effective business
communication is paying close attention to what teammates say. Listening allows you time to
think about what you will say, receive another perspective on a business matter and earn
respect from your teammates. Active listeners provide receptive nonverbal communication
through nodding, acknowledging comments, making eye contact and standing up straight,
according to Andrews University.

Step 2
Prepare for every interaction. Whether attending a business meeting, luncheon or private
meeting with a teammate, it's important to know the subject matter of every meeting and be
knowledgeable about it. Before every interaction, write down objectives, thoughts, questions
and concerns about the topic, according to the Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College Business
website. Your teammates and clients will appreciate your preparation and the meeting will
operate much more efficiently.

Step 3
Brush up on your business writing skills. Writing often doesn't receive the attention it deserves in
business, but, according to Ferris Research, the average businessperson receives about 600
emails per week, and sends out hundreds. The importance of writing warrants having a staff of
good writers. Whether you require team members to take a business writing class, or hire a
professional for instruction, writing is essential in business.

Step 4
Practice proper etiquette. Business etiquette extends far beyond the office. Use it during every
business interaction you attend. This includes luncheons, meetings, business trips and one-on-
one meetings. Every business interaction has different rules, so familiarize yourself with a
resource that clearly explains every etiquette point. Proper etiquette enhances your business
image--one of the most important aspects of your career.
Step 5
Offer encouragement to teammates. Praise is an important part of business because it gives
positive reinforcement, promotes team unity and keeps people working efficiently. If everything
you say has a commanding and negative tone, the people around you will not be motivated to
work as hard. Keep things positive and give people encouragement.
