Calcium Acetatee [ Ca(CH3COO)2]

AIM: IDENTIFICATION OF ACID AND BASIC RADICALS PRESENT IN THE GIVEN SAMPLE.
(A) PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Colour-White, Odour: odourless
State: Amorphous, Solubility: soluble in water
(B) DRY TESTS FOR ACID RADICAL :-
S.No Experiment Observation Inference
I Dilute sulphuric acid test – To a pinch of salt No brisk effervescence CO32- absent
taken in a dry test tube, 1-2 ml of dil. H2SO4 No gas with smell of SO32- absent
was added. burning sulphur
No gas with rotten egg S 2- absent
smell
No reddish brown gas NO2- absent
Ii Oxalic acid test- To a pinch of the salt taken on Smell of vinegar CH3COO-
a watch glass, oxalic acid crystals and few appears. indicated.
drops of water were added to make a paste.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS INVOLVED:-

H2C2O4 + 2CH3COO-→ C2O42- + 2CH3COOH
vinegar smell

(C) WET TEST FOR CONFIRMATION OF ACID RADICAL:-

(i) Preparation of original solution- A little amount of salt was taken in a clean dry test tube to which 5
ml distilled water was added. The test tube was shaken till the salt dissolved and a clear solution was
obtained. This solution is labelled as original solution (o.s)

(ii) Confirmatory test :

S.No Experiment Observation Inference

i Neutral ferric chloride test – Reddish colouration The presence of

To the os, neutral ferric appear. CH3COO-ion is
chloridesolution is added. confirmed.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS INVOLVED:-

3CH3COO- (aq) + FeCl3 (aq) → (CH3COO)3Fe (aq) +3Cl- (aq)
Reddish colouration.
D) DRY TESTS FOR BASIC RADICAL :-

(i) NaOH bead test-To a pinch of salt taken in a dry No gas with NH 4 + absent
test tube, 1or2 pellets of NaOH was added and ammoniacal smell
heated evolve.

(ii) Flame test-A paste of salt with conc HCl was Brick red colouration Ca2+ indicated
placed on the loop of a clean platinum wire and observed
introduced to the non-luminous flame.

(D) TEST FOR GROUP ZERO:-

1. Nessler's reagent test- To the os,Nessler's No reddish-brown ppt. NH4+ absent

reagent was added. or colouration
obtained

(E) GROUP ANALYSIS:

Ca2+ may be present
(F) CONFIRMATORY TEST OF Ca2+

S.No Experiment Observation Inference

(i) To o.s potassium chromate solution was added. No Yellow ppt. formed. Ba2+ absent
(ii) To o.s ammonium sulphate solution was added No White ppt. Sr2+ absent
obtained
(iii) To o,s ammonium oxalate solution was added White ppt. obtained Ca2+ present

Chemical equations involved –

1. Ca2+ + (NH4)2CO3 → CaCO3 ↓ + 2NH4+

White ppt.

2. Ca2+ + (NH4)2C2O4 → CaC2O4 ↓ + 2NH 4+

White ppt.

RESULT :-
(I) Acid radical = Acetate, CH3COO-
(ii) Basic radical = Calcium , Ca2+
(iii) Salt = Calcium Acetate , Ca(CH3COO)2
