I. Surface and Volume Charge Distributions

1. A disc of radius 4R has a uniform surface charge density  = 120C / m2 . A circular hole
of radius 2R is cut out of the disc and removed. If the total remaining charge is taken and
distributed uniformly over a disc of radius 6R , what will the new surface charge density
be?

2. The charge on a ring of radius R = 30 cm and charge density  = 8C / m is spread

uniformly over the total surface area of a closed cylinder of radius R = 30 cm and height
40cm . Find the surface charge density on the cylinder.

3. A charge of 16 C is distributed uniformly throughout the volume of a jar with a

cylindrical bottom and a hemispherical lid on top. The radius of the cylinder and hemi-
sphere are 20cm and the height of the cylindrical portion is 40cm . Find the volume
density of the charge in the jar.

4. A uniform cylinder with uniform volume charge density is placed in water. It is found that
the cylinder floats with one third of its height above water. When an external uniform
electric field E = 40 N / C is applied in the region in the vertically upward direction, half
the height of the cylinder is found to be above water. Find the volume charge density of
the cylinder. (Assume g = 10m / s 2 )

II. Practice Exercise

5. A closed cylinder of radius 14 cm and height 21cm has a uniform charge density
 = 60 C / m3 over its entire outer surface. Find the total charge on the cylinder. Use
22
= .

6. A cuboid of height 7cm and length and breadth of 5cm and 3cm is placed vertically. The
cuboid has a uniform volume charge density of 100 C / m3 . The cuboid is then placed
under a power hammer which hits it from the top and compresses it to form a 5cm  3cm
rectangular plate. Find the surface charge density of the plate assuming it is uniform.

7. Your friend Arun is holding an insulating ball with uniform volume charge density
200 C / m3 . You take out your hand and cast the ''conductrify'' spell on the insulating ball
which immediately turns into a conductor. Now the charges are uniformly spread only on
the surface of the ball. If the uniform surface charge density of the ball is 40 C / m 2 , find
the total charge that Arun is now holding.

8. A vertically placed, thin hollow cylinder (open at both ends) of radius r = 5 cm and height
h has uniform surface charge density  = 500 C on its outer surface. When the cylinder
is crushed from the top it becomes a thin circular ring of radius r . What was the total
charge on the cylinder that became a ring?

9. A uniformly distributed spherical charge with total charge Q , behaves outside the sphere
as if it was just a point charge Q situated at the center of the sphere. So to calculate the
electric field or electric potential outside a sphere, we simply replace it by an equivalent
point charge at the center. You have two spheres, A and B of radius 2R and 8R
respectively, that are far apart and have the same potential at points on their surfaces.
Find the ratio of the surface charge density of A to the surface charge density of B .

10. A hollow insulating sphere, of inner radius R / 2 and outer radius R , has a uniform
volume charge density of  . There is no charge in the hollow portion. Hermione waves
her wand and the sphere suddenly becomes a conductor and all the charges run to the
outer surface and are uniformly distributed there. Find the new charge density that is
relevant for this situation.

III. Extra Problems

11. A cuboid box penetrates a huge plane sheet of charge with uniform surface charge
density 2.5 10−2 cm −2 such that its smallest surfaces are parallel to the sheet of charge. If
the dimensions of the box are 10 cm  5 cm  3cm then find the charge enclosed by the box.

12. If a cube of side 5cm has a charge of 6 microcoulombs (  C ) , then find the surface charge
density.

13. Find the surface charge density at a place on Earth’s surface where the rate of fall of
potential is 2.5V .

14. What is the surface charge density on a sphere with R = 2 cm and Q = 4C uniformly
distributed on the sphere’s surface?
(A) 0.01C / m2 (B) 124 C / m2 (C) 0.45 10−7 C / m2 (D) 7.96 10−4 C / m2

15. A large plane sheet has an area 30 cm 2 and has a charge of 18mC uniformly distributed
over it. Find the surface charge density.
