Evaluation System

The Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) created an evaluation instrument

designed for prototype development with six primary criteria namely: aesthetic, workability,

durability, economy, safety as well as saleability. These criteria are defined as takes after:

Aesthetics adverts toward the physical traits of the prototype. It involves the

appropriateness of the applied colors, form, size and also the style of the design;

Workability includes the availability of resources, ease of use of mastery, and even the

availability of tools and machine;

Durability adverts towards the quality of materials, craft, and design of the prototype;

Economy include the terms of resources needed, time and labor spent, also the machine/s

require to develop the prototype;

Safety is measured in terms of absence of toxic/hazardous materials, the absence of sharp

edges and the minimal installation requirement; and

Saleability deals on the presence of market demand of the prototype, the accessibility of

finish product and also competitiveness to cost.

The evaluation instrument has a five-point Lickert Scale in where the highest is 5 and 1 is

the lowest. Table 1 presents the Lickert Scale and the Descriptive Interpretation of the Mean

used in the description of evaluation results.

Table 1: Lickert Scale and Descriptive Interpretation of the Mean
Numerical Rating Equivalent Mean Rating
5 High Acceptable 4.50- 5.00

4 Very Acceptable 3.51 – 4.50

3 Acceptable 2.51 – 3.50

2 Fairly Acceptable 1.51 – 2.50

1 Not Acceptable 1.00 – 4.50
