CHAPTER THREE:
RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION

1. SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS, aRECOMMENDATIONS

AND RESULTS

1.1. Summary of Major Findings

The system presented in this research work shows that we really built a good face detection
and recognition system. With this system one can easily detect a face on an image compare it with
faces that were previously taken a saved in a database, the face’s information will then be displayed
for other uses depending on the users’ needs. So, I can say I achieved our objectives since I could:

 Build a faces training set,

 Detect faces on any given images containing frontal faces end even some tilted faces,
 Recognise people from their faces images by comparing them with those previously saved in
the training set,
 Display necessary information about the recognised faces,

All this work was done using a single powerful software MATLAB which has all the required
components for the design and implementation of this research work.

1.2. Recommendations
For the good implantation of this research work, I went through many difficulties some of
which are highlighted in the lines below:

 It was not easy for me to apply the different face recognition, detection, tracking and counting
formulae using MATLAB,
 I had difficulties to get the necessary datasets to test the system’s performance,

I recommend the following:

 The necessary MATLAB toolboxes and Simulink for electrical and electronics engineering
should seriously be taught to students of the Electrical and Power engineering of HTTTC
Bambili-UBa. In other words, MATLAB should be taught to them as a course for them to
easily implement systems using this powerful software,
 The users of the system or similar systems should use good cameras for better performance of
the system. This because the camera plays a crucial role in the working of the system hence
the image quality and performance of the camera in real time scenario must be tested especially
if the system is operated from a live camera feed.
 Students at the final years should be morally and financially prepared for final year research
works and work hard to have the best works,
 Since the system is not 100% efficient, an operator should be provided to verify the false
recognitions done by the system,
 This system should be applicable in the university of Bamenda and any other environment that
need secured identification systems,

1.3. Conclusion
Face detection and Face recognition are technologies which are almost reaching sufficient
maturity for them to experience a rapid growth in practical applications. Many researches
around the world are being applied to ameliorate the performance, the accuracy and capabilities of
face detection and recognition systems. The system implemented in this research work, was chosen
after extensive research, and the successful results gotten from the different tests done confirms that
the choices I made were reliable ones. The system presented which uses face detection as a primary
step to face detection in one way and direct use of faces for recognition in another way permits me to
attempt good system performance with face detection as well as face recognition compared to many
other existing systems used for the same purpose. The fully automated face detection system displayed
very interesting accuracy for frontal view faces and good accuracy for side view faces. The proposed
fully automated face detection and recognition system was not robust enough to achieve a very high
recognition performance (99% and above) because of environmental constraints, pose, illumination,
etc.…, yet, I hope that this project can be research on further to create a better design that can be
applied to a larger scale applications. Besides achieving the main objective, this system can also be
used for face counting and tracking. The friendly GUI built makes the system so easy to use thus, no
need been a computer or electronic geek to use the system and there is no need for specialized
hardware for installing the system as it only uses a computer and a camera. The implemented fully
automated face detection and recognition system has so many areas of application as described in this
work (e.g. law enforcement, biometry, access management, etc.).

1.4. Areas for further studies

For future work, I suggest the use of:

 The use of Microsoft access to build a more secured face database,

 Since it is now possible to have 3D images, 3D Face Recognition could be used to have better
system’s performances,
 Large scale applications with more training set such as e-commerce, digital driver licenses, or
even students ID cards, national ID cards which are more challenging tasks could also be
implemented.
