Overview
The Rotor Data Monitor (RDM) is used primarily to detect and trend shaft
currents and voltages present in rotating machinery. In addition a flux
monitoring module is optional when monitoring power generators for shorted
rotor turn detection.
The shaft current data is acquired via a permanently installed shunt resistor
that converts the current signal into a voltage input. Raw voltage inputs are
utilized on power generators as an indication of abnormalities in excitation
and early detection of field winding faults.
Features
The RDM can monitor machines with various
shaft grounding configurations and is available
in 4 standard models. Each model comprises
local and remote alarm facility, 4-20mA
analogue outputs for each brush measured,
data storage of last 100 events, on-screen
display of current/voltage waveform and actual
measured values.
Models Available
RDM-PG1 for Power Generators and Gas Turbines
The RDM-PG1 monitors a single grounding brush located at the turbine end of
the generator as well as a voltage sensing brush located at the exciter end of
the generator (ungrounded). Purpose is to detect increase in shaft current,
detect loss of bearing insulation and detect field winding ground faults as well
as excitation abnormalities.
RDM-PG2 for Turbomachines with 2 grounding brushes
The RDM-PG2 monitors two grounding brushes simultaneously. A typical
arrangement will be for brushes mounted on low and high speed shafts of a
specific train. Purpose is to detect increase in shaft current as well as
circulating currents within a gearbox.
RDM-PG3 for Turbomachines with 4 grounding brushes
The RDM-PG3 monitors four grounding brushes simultaneously. A typical
arrangement will be for brushes mounted on long machine trains, multi-stage
screw compressors or multi-geared machines. Purpose is to detect increase in
shaft current as well as circulating currents within the machine train.
RDM-HG1 for Hydro Generators and Gas Turbines
The RDM-HG1 monitors two grounding brushes and a voltage sensing brush
located at the exciter end of the generator (ungrounded). Purpose is to detect
increase in shaft current, detect circulating current in GT gearbox, detect loss
of bearing insulation and detect field winding ground faults as well as
excitation abnormalities.
