Classification
According to shape, arrangement and the specialization of their free surface:
Simple - composed of a single layer of cells, it is called simple epithelial tissue
Stratified - composed of two or more layers of cells.
Pseudostratified - tissue that consists of a single layer of irregularly shaped and sized cells that
give the appearance of multiple layers.
Transitional - characterized by an apical layer of cells that change shape in response to the
presence of urine.
The number of cell layers and cell types together give rise to 6 different types of epithelial tissue.
Epithelia can also be classified based on the shape of the cells, giving rise to three types:
Squamous epithelial tissue: consists of extremely thin cells that resemble the scales of a fish
Cuboidal epithelial tissue: contains cells that appear square in cross-section but are marginally
longer than they are wide
Columnar epithelial tissue: consists of elongated cell involved in absorption of materials
Simple Squamous Epithelium Air sacs of the lungs and the Allow the material to pass
lining of the heart, blood vessels through diffusion and filtration
and lymphatic vessels and secrete lubricating
substance
Simple Cuboidal epithelium In the ducts and secretory Secrete and Absorb
portion of small glans and in
kidney tubules
Simple Columnar Epithelium Ciliated tissue are in bronchi , Absorbs ;it also secrete mucos
uterine tubes and uterus ; and enzyme
Smooth(nonciliated tissue ) are
in the digestive tract and bladder
Pseudostratified Columnar Ciliated tissue lines the trachea Secrete Mucus; ciliated tissue
Epithelium and much of the upper move mucus
respiratory tract
Stratified Squamous Epithelium Lines the esophagus, mouth and Protects against abrasion
vagina
Stratified Columnar Epithelium Male urethra and the ducts Secrete and Protect
some of glands
Transitional Epithelium Lines the bladder, urethra and Allows urinary organs to expand
the ureters and stretch
