Centrifugal Pump Training Course
Part # : RI-109
Modules: 13
Introduction
The ever-present centrifugal pump is a critical component of most processes, tirelessly
moving fluids, ranging from the innocuous to the toxic and flammable, from one stage of a
process to the next. Without highly trained and confident operators to control and watch
over these process machines, we will never realize the full potential of our complex
processes.

This course, while specifically developed for process operators who regularly deal with
centrifugal pumps, can serve a wide range of training needs. The information contained in
this course is of immense value for maintenance, reliability professionals and engineers
who regularly detail with this equipment. The training materials address key pump
variables and factors under the operator’s control, while minimizing the use of design
theory and mathematics.

The following topics will be covered:

1. Importance of equipment reliability and what role operators play in this mission
2. Centrifugal pump operating characteristics
3. Mechanical seals and their related seal flush plans
4. What operators should know about electric motors
5. Lubrication basics
6. Troubleshooting basics
7. How to start a pump reliability program

By the end of the course, participants should possess a clear understanding of how to
operate and monitor their centrifugal pumps to ensure reliable and trouble-free operation.

What will I learn during the training?

 The importance of equipment reliability and what role operators play in this
mission.
 Understanding centrifugal pump operating characteristics
 Understanding mechanical seals and their related seal flush plans.
 How to start a centrifugal pump
 Troubleshooting basics
 How to start a pump reliability program

What will I do with my training

 Be able to track and interpret basic pump reliability parameters in order to improve
mechanical reliability at your site.
 Be able to review centrifugal pump design documents and understand their basic
performance characteristics.
 Be able to identify common seal flush plans and how they function.
 Be able to safely startup centrifugal pumps for various situations, such as after a
repair, when there is no back- pressure present when the pump is proven, etc.
 Be able to address problematic pumps by identifying common pump symptoms
and understand what the symptoms might be telling you.
 Learn the 10 vital steps required to start a successful reliability program

What will I gain from the training?

 This course provides those who regularly deal with centrifugal pumps new insight
into how their internal components function and what is required for reliability
operation.
 The student will gain an overall understanding of how centrifugal pumps fit into
process systems and when how they should be operated to maximize their
reliability and minimize their cost of ownership.
 By the end of the course the student should leave with a deeper under- standing of
centrifugal pump operations and feel more empowered to affect the site’s overall
reliability after they return to work.

Target Audience

 Plant operators, operations supervisors, plant managers, project engineers,

reliability engineers and managers, maintenance engineers and managers will all
benefit from attending this course.
 Anyone who depends on centrifugal pumps to power their processes should
consider attending.
 Novices as well as seasoned veterans of the process industry will find the course
material fresh and relevant to their current job assignments.
