PREFACE
As a part of B.Ed curriculum and in order to gain practice knowledge
about the ‘Benefits of Educational websites and videos’ I was asked to
make the research on the same.
➢Self – Reflection
INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATIONAL
WEBSITES
In the past, learning and education simply meant face-to-face lectures,
reading books or printed handouts, taking notes and completing
assignments generally in the form of answering questions or writing
essays . In short ,education , learning, and teaching were considered
impossible without a teacher, books and chalkboards. Today, education
and training have taken on a whole new meaning . Computers are an
essential part of every classroom and teachers are using DVDs, CD-
ROMS and videos to show students how things work and operate.
Students can interact with the subject matters through the use of such
web based tools and CD- ROMS. Moreover, each student can progress
at his own pause.
CRUST: There are two different types of crust: thin oceanic crust
that underlies the ocean basins, and thicker continental crust that
underlies the continents. These two different types of crust are
made up of different types of rock. The thin oceanic crust is
composed of primarily of basalt, and the thicker continental crust
is composed primarily of granite. The low density of the thick
continental crust allows it to "float" in high relief on the much
higher density mantle below.
MANTLE : The mantle lies below the crust and is up to 2900 km
thick. It consists of hot, dense, iron and magnesium-rich solid
rock. The crust and the upper part of the mantle make up the
lithosphere, which is broken into plates, both large and small.
CORE: The core is the centre of the earth and is made up of two
parts: the liquid outer core and solid inner core. The outer core is
made of nickel, iron and molten rock. Temperatures here can
reach up to 50,000 C.
While searching my topic on the internet the very first website that popped at
the top of the screen was Wikipedia. It is one of the most preferred websites
by the students as it is very well known and well established website. It was
founded by Jimmy Wals and Larry Sanger on January 15, 2001. The main
reason of its popularity is that it is available in 300 languages.
❖ Videos create more engaging sensory experience that using print materials
alone. Learners actually get to see and hear the concept being taught.
❖ Videos increase knowledge retention, since they can be stopped and relayed
as many times as needed. They can also be reviewed long after the initial
lesson was taught.
❖ They increase proficiency in digital literacy and communication, which are
important 21st century skills.
❖ Videos increase student’s engagement, which in turn helps boost
achievement. If students are interested in the materials, they will better
process and remember it.
The use of videos in teaching and learning serves to not only benefit
students, but also teachers and their affiliated institutions. A 2015
study conducted by software company Kaltura concluded that 93%
of teachers believe that the use of educational videos improves the
learning experience. They also serve to break down barriers, such
as student and campus location, which were once insurmountable.
RESEARCHED EDUCATIONAL
VIDEOS
Here, I have selected top three online educational videos which
appeared on the YOUTUBE website after searching for the topic
“JUDICIARY” of class 8th civics book NCERT. These videos are easily
accessible to the student and provide a proper visual aid in their
studies.
The very first videos deals with the Introduction to the structure of Earth and
showing the crust , mantle amd core in a 3D diagram with full explanation.
• POSITIVE REVIEWS: The above shown video is quite
impressive as it uses a fluent language which is used at the
background of the video.
• It properly shows moving flowcharts and images related to the
topic.
• The video is quite interesting as it uses good examples and
makes the viewer feel like its talking to them.
• A very much deep explanation about the topic.
• The videos clearly showed that the instructor is very much
knowledge about the topic.
• Number of examples was good enough.
• POSITIVE REVIEWS:
• This video is quite detailed as the tutor present in it has
explained the text topic by topic.
• The tutor has covered all the chapter and gave good examples
• The most impressive part is the use of white board and side by
side of the projector which makes the video impressive.
• The video has provided us the subtitles so that learner can
understand thing more clear.
• Usage of graphic designs were very good.
• NAGATIVE REVIEWS:
• Apart from the positivity, the video is not that interesting as it
follows the regular classroom teaching style and does not
provide much newness to the students.
• The tutor in the video is being speedy with the concept and
making the material a bit complicated which can confuse the
learner.
• The whole video was revolving around the symbols and couldn’t
cover all the aspects of content.
• The video talked about only 4-5 big parties and neglected the
role of other small parties who help big parties during coalition.
SELF-REFLECTION
After researching and analysing all these educational website and online videos I
realised that how much helpful internet and technology is for today’s children.
Internet and technology plays a very vital role in education. It is no doubt that in
this modern era everyone prefers Google for their queries, problems or doubts.
Popular search engines like Yahoo, Google, etc. are the topmost choice of people
as these offer an easy and instant reach to the vast amount of information in just
a few seconds. It contains a wealth of knowledge that can be searched at any
time. The internet has introduced improvements in technology,
communication, and online entertainment.
Researches shown that, time and again that students learn best when they
are engaged. Through the use of technology, students can become active
participants as opposed to passive ones where they simply receive information.
Perhaps the greatest impact of technology in the field of learning is its ability to
help several people learn simultaneously from different locations.
The Educational websites and the Videos have helped eliminate the need for
an instructor based lesson plans. Individual pacing is one of the most important
aspects, and is helpful to all. Naturally, for education technology to have a positive
effect on students, it should be designed and prepared well.
