INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATIONAL
WEBSITES
In the past, learning and education simply meant face-to-face lectures,
reading books or printed handouts, taking notes and completing
assignments generally in the form of answering questions or writing
essays . In short ,education , learning, and teaching were considered
impossible without a teacher, books and chalkboards. Today, education
and training have taken on a whole new meaning . Computers are an
essential part of every classroom and teachers are using DVDs, CD-
ROMS and videos to show students how things work and operate.
Students can interact with the subject matters through the use of such
web based tools and CD- ROMS. Moreover, each student can progress
at his own pause.

The role of technology the field of education is four fold: it is included

as a part of the curriculum, as an instructions and also as a tool to
enhance the entire learning process. Education has gone from passive
and reactive to interactive and aggressive. Education is essential in co-
operate and academic settings. In the former, education or training is
used to help workers do things differently than they did before. In the
latter; education is geared towards creating curiosity in the minds of
students.

Educational websites can include websites that have games,

videos or topic related resources that act as tools to enhance
learning and supplement classroom teaching.

❖TOPIC OF INTEREST: “STRUCTURE OF
THE EARTH” (GEOGRAPHY, CLASS-7TH
The Earth's Structure

The earth is made up of three different layers: the crust, the

mantle and the core. The interior of the Earth, like that of the other
terrestrial planets, is chemically divided into layers. The Earth has
an outer silicate solid crust, a highly viscous mantle, a liquid outer
core that is much less viscous than the mantle, and a solid inner
core. Many of the rocks now making up the Earth's crust formed
less than 100 million years ago; however the oldest known
mineral grains are 4.4 billion years old, indicating that the Earth
has had a solid crust for at least that long.

CRUST: There are two different types of crust: thin oceanic crust
that underlies the ocean basins, and thicker continental crust that
underlies the continents. These two different types of crust are
made up of different types of rock. The thin oceanic crust is
composed of primarily of basalt, and the thicker continental crust
is composed primarily of granite. The low density of the thick
continental crust allows it to "float" in high relief on the much
higher density mantle below.
MANTLE : The mantle lies below the crust and is up to 2900 km
thick. It consists of hot, dense, iron and magnesium-rich solid
rock. The crust and the upper part of the mantle make up the
lithosphere, which is broken into plates, both large and small.
CORE: The core is the centre of the earth and is made up of two
parts: the liquid outer core and solid inner core. The outer core is
made of nickel, iron and molten rock. Temperatures here can
reach up to 50,000 C.

The boundaries between these layers were discovered

by seismographs which showed the way vibrations bounced off the
layers during earthquakes. Between the Earth's crust and the mantle is
a boundary called the moho. It was the first discovery of a major
change in the Earth's structure as one goes deeper.

WEBSITE: 1:- Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structure_of_the_Earth

While searching my topic on the internet the very first website that popped at
the top of the screen was Wikipedia. It is one of the most preferred websites
by the students as it is very well known and well established website. It was
founded by Jimmy Wals and Larry Sanger on January 15, 2001. The main
reason of its popularity is that it is available in 300 languages.

The content ‘Structure of the earth is widely explained in this educational

website. Firstly, An 3D attractive diagram of structure of the earth is shown at
the top of the page. Then the introduction of meaning of structure of earth is
given. After meaning, we found the interior layers of the earth mentioned.
After clicking on this website, there was the introduction of the topic where
the meaning and definition of Structure of the earth was given. The next
paragraph was about the origin of the factual information about the crust ,
mantle and core of earth. The website divided the one paragraph from the
next by putting sub-headings in between. The three different layers of the
earth was briefly described.

student is unique and learns differently and works towards helping them
learn better.
This website has almost all the material about the concept was looking
for. It starts with the general meaning and gradually moved to the
critical understanding of the structure of the earth. This website covered
the definition, functions of layers of the earth and made us understand
how earth is made of three different layers and what interior structure
of earth is. It had a quiz option in the last to check your knowledge
about the content. To use that quiz option first leaner has to sign up for

short which means that it had missed out some important
points which can affect the preparation of the student.
• The pop-ups are quite frequent which can distract a student
while reading.

which is always considered as the important part to start with
any introduction.
• 2) The websites fails to give any proper meaning and definition
of the topic.

• 4) Much focus was given to the philosophies rather than the
reality.
• 5) Number of examples was very less.
EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS: NEED AND
IMPORTANCE
One of the effective applications of technology aided instruction is
interactive instructional videos. Interactive instructional Videos are
effective designs which include texts, sounds, pictures,
photographs, illustrations, animations and other multimedia
modes.
The influence of digital videos on our everyday culture is
undeniable. Students today are utilizing educational videos as tool
for learning everything. The benefits of using educational videos are
numerous:

With digital videos continuing to gain popularity, it seems only natural

that this familiar and widespread platform extends into the education
setting.

❖ Videos create more engaging sensory experience that using print materials
alone. Learners actually get to see and hear the concept being taught.
❖ Videos increase knowledge retention, since they can be stopped and relayed
as many times as needed. They can also be reviewed long after the initial
lesson was taught.
❖ They increase proficiency in digital literacy and communication, which are
important 21st century skills.
❖ Videos increase student’s engagement, which in turn helps boost
achievement. If students are interested in the materials, they will better
process and remember it.

The use of videos in teaching and learning serves to not only benefit
students, but also teachers and their affiliated institutions. A 2015
study conducted by software company Kaltura concluded that 93%
of teachers believe that the use of educational videos improves the
learning experience. They also serve to break down barriers, such
as student and campus location, which were once insurmountable.

SELF-REFLECTION
After researching and analysing all these educational website and online videos I
realised that how much helpful internet and technology is for today’s children.
Internet and technology plays a very vital role in education. It is no doubt that in
this modern era everyone prefers Google for their queries, problems or doubts.
Popular search engines like Yahoo, Google, etc. are the topmost choice of people
as these offer an easy and instant reach to the vast amount of information in just
a few seconds. It contains a wealth of knowledge that can be searched at any
time. The internet has introduced improvements in technology,
communication, and online entertainment.

Researches shown that, time and again that students learn best when they
are engaged. Through the use of technology, students can become active
participants as opposed to passive ones where they simply receive information.
Perhaps the greatest impact of technology in the field of learning is its ability to
help several people learn simultaneously from different locations.
The Educational websites and the Videos have helped eliminate the need for
an instructor based lesson plans. Individual pacing is one of the most important
aspects, and is helpful to all. Naturally, for education technology to have a positive
effect on students, it should be designed and prepared well.
