honours Christ at Christmas

At the beginning of
December we decorate a
Christmas tree which
has become one of the
most beloved and well
known holiday symbols.
Στις αρχές Δεκεμβρίου
διακοσμούμε ένα
χριστουγεννιάτικο δέντρο
που έχει γίνει ένα από τα
πιο αγαπημένα και γνωστά
χριστουγεννιάτικα σύμβολα .
Christmas carols-
Κάλαντα
During the Christmas period we
sing carols called "kalanda“ which
have been handed down from
Byzantine times. These Carols
are usually sung , by children and
teenagers who go round their
neighborhood in groups . The
house owners give some money
and some sweets.

Κατά τη διάρκεια των

Χριστουγέννων τραγουδάμε τα
κάλαντα .Συνήθως τραγουδιούνται
από παιδιά και έφηβους που
περνούν γύρω από τη γειτονιά τους The children from our school singing
σε ομάδες. Οι οικοδεσπότες δίνουν
λεφτά ή γλυκά.

 Christmas Eve-Παραμονή Χριστουγέννων
On Christmas Eve women in Cyprus
knead a special bread called
"gennopitta“ known as“Christopsomo”.
Christopsomo is eaten on Christmas day.
This bread is a sweet yeast bread, and is
characteristically decorated with the
symbol of the cross.
Την Παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων, οι
γυναίκες στην Κύπρο ζυμώνουν ένα ψωμί
που ονομάζεται "γενόπιττα" γνωστό ως
"Χριστόψωμο".
Ο Χριστόψωμο τρώγεται την ημέρα των
Χριστουγέννων.
Αυτό το ψωμί είναι ένα γλυκό ζυμωτό ψωμί
και χαρακτηρίζεται από το σύμβολο του
σταυρού.
 A little pig for Christmas –Γουρούνι
In the villages of Cyprus each family
used to buy a little pig on Palm Sunday,
in spring.
2-3 days before Christmas this pig was
slaughtered and cut into pieces. Some of
pieces were put in wine, together with
salt, coriander and hang to make
smoked meat or sausages and gelatin to
eat them on Christmas Day.
Στα χωριά της Κύπρου κάθε οικογένεια
αγόραζε μικρό γουρούνι την Κυριακή των
Βαΐων , την άνοιξη.
2-3 ημέρες πριν από τα Χριστούγεννα
έσφαζαν το γουρούνι και το εκοβαν σε
κομμάτια. Μερικά κομμάτια τα έβαζαν στο
κρασί μαζί με αλάτι, κόλιανδρο και τα
κρέμαζαν για να φτιάξουν καπνιστό κρέας ή
λουκάνικα και ζαλατίνα για να τα φάνε την
ημέρα των Χριστουγέννων.

One of the most important ways
Cyprus celebrates Christmas is
through food. The time for family
gatherings and holiday meals.
Dishes such as stuffed turkey ,or Souvla
“Souvla” which is roasted lamb or
pork meat cooked on charcoal, are
traditionally eaten on Christmas Ένας από τους σημαντικότερους

 New Year’s Eve-Παραμονή Πρωτοχρονιάς
A common village tradition is to cross a leaf
of olive tree by a fireplace and then, after
making a wish to Saint Vassilis , toss it into
the fire.Before tossing the leaf into the
flames, you would say ” Saint Vassili King, show
and illuminate if I am loved by… and then you
name whoever’s love you are hoping for.
If the leaf jumps up after you dropped it in
the fire, then that means the person loves
you. If not, you try again.
Μια κοινή παράδοση είναι να σταυρώσεις με ένα
φύλλο ελιάς το τζάκι και στη συνέχεια, μετά από
μια επιθυμία στον Άγιο Βασίλη, να το ρίξεις στη
φωτιά.
Πριν πετάξεις τα φύλλα στις φλόγες, λες « Αι
Βασιλη Βασιλιά , δείξε και φανέρωσε αν με
αγαπά ... και στη συνέχεια ονομάζετε όποιον
θέλετε.
Εάν το φύλλο αναπηδήσει μέσα στη φωτιά, τότε
αυτό σημαίνει ότι το πρόσωπο σας αγαπά. Αν
όχι, προσπαθήστε ξανά.
 On New Year’s Eve the table is set for Santa
Claus- Παραμονή πρωτοχρονιάς
• A glass of wine for him to
drink ,New Year’s pie to eat, a
candle to light the way, a
purse to bring money and some
nuts and wheat seeds so that
people have good crops in the
new year.
• Ένα ποτήρι κρασί για να πιει την
πίτα της Πρωτοχρονιάς για
φαγητό, ένα κερί για να φωτίσει
τον τόπο, ένα πορτοφόλι για να
φέρει χρήματα και μερικά
καρύδια και σπόρους σιταριού
έτσι ώστε οι άνθρωποι να έχουν
καλή σοδειά κατά τη νέα χρονιά.

 Vasilopitta-Βασιλόπιττα
Vasilopitta is a traditional cake
which is made on the 1st of January
every year especially for Ayios
Vasilios.
They cut it into pieces and one
piece has a coin inside. The person
who finds it, is believed to be lucky
for the rest of the year.

Μια παραδοσιακή τούρτα που

ονομάζεται «vasilopitta» για την
Πρωτοχρονιά.
Βάζουμε ένα νόμισμα μέσα και όποιος
βρίσκει το κέρμα είναι ο τυχερός για
το έτος.

opened on New Year’s Day rather
than at Christmas, to honour
Saint Vasilis, the Greek saint
associated with Santa Claus.

❖ Τυπικά, τα δώρα ανοίγουν την

Πρωτοχρονιά και όχι τα
Χριστούγεννα, για να τιμήσουν
τον Άγιο Βασίλη.

• On New Year’s Day people

also go to church and after
the service they express
wishes and kiss each other.

• Την Πρωτοχρονιά οι
άνθρωποι πηγαίνουν
επίσης στην εκκλησία και
μετά την θεία λειτουργία
εκφράζουν ευχές και
φιλιούνται.

Epiphany- Επιφάνεια
On Epiphany Day, housewives baked
“kserotiana” or “loukoumades” which is
a kind of doughnut. They used to throw
some doughnuts on the houses’ roofs
so “kalikantzaroi”, would eat and leave.
After Mass, the village’s priest went
around all the houses and sprinkled
people with holy water. He was
accompanied by a child who held the
container with the holy water. All
people would throw some coins in the
container, as a gift to the priest.

Την ημέρα των Θεοφανίων, οι

νοικοκυρές ψήνουν ξεροτήανα ή
λουκουμάδες. Παλιά έριχναν
λουκουμάδες στις στέγες των σπιτιών,
και όταν οι καλικάντζαροι θα έτρωγαν
θα έφευγαν . Μετά τη θεία Λειτουργία,
ο ιερέας του χωριού πήγαινε σε όλα τα
σπίτια και ράντιζε τους ανθρώπους με
ιερό νερό. Συνοδευόταν από ένα παιδί
που κρατούσε το δοχείο με το ιερό
νερό. Όλοι οι άνθρωποι έριχναν
νομίσματα στο δοχείο, ως δώρο στον
ιερέα

The blessing of holy water

The 12th day of Christmas…The festival

of Epiphany (6 January) is known in
Cyprus as ‘Ta Fota’ which means ‘the
light’ and is a big festival and
celebrations take place in all the
harbours.
During Epiphany the church service is
integrated along the sea front where in
front of the people the priests drop the
Holy Cross into the sea.
At the same time some “brave” people
jump into the cold water to bring back the
cross.
Κατά την ημέρα των Θεοφανείων στις
6 Ιανουαρίου η θεία λειτουργία γίνεται
κοντά στης θάλασσα οι ιερείς ρίχνουν
τον Τίμιο Σταυρό στη θάλασσα.
Ταυτόχρονα, κάποιοι «δυνατοί"
άνθρωποι μπαίνουν στο κρύο νερό για
να φέρουν πίσω το σταυρό.

Last tradition in Cyprus
that we do in the
Epiphany Day, is to ask
for "pouloustrina"
(money) from our
grandparents.
The grandchildren sing a
specific song that goes Η τελευταία παράδοση στην Κύπρο που
"Kalimera ke ta fota" / κάνουμε στην Ημέρα των Θεοφανίων
"Goodmorning and the είναι να ζητήσουμε «πουλουστρίνα"
