MEANING OF BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Beach Volleyball is an outdoor sand-based court sport played between two teams of two.
The aim of the game is to hit an inflated ball over a net that hangs high at the center of the
court and make it land in the opposition's half.

Objectives of the Game

 In Beach Volleyball, the main objective is to hit the ball in a tactical way so that the
opposing team cannot return it in a "legal" fashion.

 One team will begin the game by striking the ball over the net, which is known as a
"serve". Both teams will then compete in what is known as a "rally", where the ball
exchanges hands and flies above the net between both sides of the court. A rally
finishes when one team cannot return the ball, and a point is marked for the team that
forced the error.

 The team that reaches 21 points (by two clear points) first is declared the winner of a
set, and two set wins are required to emerge victorious in the overall match.

History of Beach Volleyball

Beach volleyball was probably first played in Hawaii in 1915, when the Outrigger Beach and
Canoe Club set up a court on Waikiki Beach. Most people though believe that it begun in
Santa Monica, California, in the 1920s, about 25 years after the indoor version of the game
was invented on the other side of the USA in Massachusetts.

The sport began as a form of family fun at the beach, and its wide appeal and low cost
meant it soon spread around the world. By the 1930s it was being played in the strangest
places: Riga, Sofia and Prague, the capital cities of Latvia, Bulgaria, and the then
Czechoslovakia.

The sport was given a boost during the Great Depression. Cash-strapped Americans in the
hundreds flocked to the beaches to play what was Virtually a no-cost pastime and a free
source of entertainment. By the 1950s, competitions were being held in California. Included
on the program were beauty contests and other forms of entertainment. As the sport
continued to grow, it wasn't long before sponsors came forward to take advantage of beach
volleyball's popularity, and by the 1970s a full-fledged pro beach volleyball tour was
organized. In 1986, the International Volleyball Federation recognized the sport. Since
then, beach volleyball's world tour has spread from the United States into Asia and Europe.

In 1999 it featured twelve open events for men and six for women with a total prize money
of US$3.66 million. The 1999 tour attracted more than 460,000 spectators.

Beach volleyball was a demonstration sport at the 1992 0lympics in Barcelona, and shortly
afterward the International Olympic Committee announced that the sport will be included in
the 1996 games in Atlanta.

Rules and Regulations

 Like indoor volleyball, a team is always desperate to ground the ball in the
opposition's court.
 If the opponent sends the ball in an illegal manner they commit a fault. a Before
sending the ball to the opponent's side there may be consecutive contacts made by
the players. These contacts have to be made by different players and only three
touches are allowed for a team before sending the ball to the other side.

 The beach volleyball playing area is completely made up of sands. Any is removed
from the surface of the court to prevent any type of injuries as normally players like
to play with bare foot so these precautions are taken.

 The level of sand should be minimum 40 centimeters deep inside the court. It may
increase in different competitions.

 A standard volley ball court has a length of 16 meters and breadth of 8 meters and
the court is rectangular in shape.

 Surrounding the court, a free zone is there which has a width of 3 meters and there
is no obstruction for at least a height of 7 meters.

 In each team, there are only two players. So a total of four players can compete
with each other.

 Scoring system in beach volley is an interesting one. The best of three sets played
between the players. In each set, a maximum of 21 points can be scored by a team
to win the match. If the match is moved to the third or the deciding set, then the
maximum points are reduced to 15 instead of 21.

 Open hand touches are not allowed in beach volley. Any type of open hand touch or
dink or tip is recommended as an illegal action.

 During the match, if a block is occurred at the net, then it will be counted as a touch
and the number of allowed touches is reduced to two.

 A net is used in beach volleyball game and the players always try to shoot the ball
above the net. The height of the beach volleyball net is around 8 feet for men and 7
feet 4 inches for women. The height of the net varies for teenagers.

 In beach volleyball, the ball is the center of the play. A spherical ball used in beach
volley is either made up of flexible synthetic material or leather.

 The ball is striped with bright colors which makes it look beautiful and attractive. The
weight of the ball is around 300 grams.

Violations in Beach Volleyball

 Consecutive Contacts. A player may not hit the ball 2 times consecutively except
when blocking, provided the contacts take place simultaneously. However, a player may
make consecutive contacts on the team’s first team contact, provided the contacts
occur during one action.

 Four Hits. It's a violation for a team to hit the ball 4 times before returning it.

 Assisted Hit. It's illegal for a player or any object to assist a teammate in playing the
ball.
 Catch. It's illegal to catch or throw the ball. The ball must rebound from the hit.

 Ball Crossing the Net outside the Crossing Space. The ball must cross the net
within the crossing space. The ball must cross over the net, between the antennas and
their imaginary extension, and without contacting the ceiling.

 Reaching Over the Net. There are official rules for playing the ball at the net.

 Penetration under the Net. It's permitted for a player to step under the net into the
opponents court provided that some part of the penetrating hand or foot is in contact
with or is directly above the center line.

 Contact with the Net. Contact with the net is only a fault if contact is made during the
action of playing the ball or if it interferes with play.

 Foot Fault. At the moment of service contact or take off for a jump serve, the server
must not touch the court or the ground outside the service zone. After contact, he/she
may step or land outside the service zone or inside the court.

Beach Volleyball - Equipment

1.) Net

A net is used in beach volleyball game and the players always try to shoot the ball above
the net. The height of the beach volleyball net is around 8 feet for men and 7 feet 4 inches
for women.

2. Ball

As the name of the sport is volleyball so a ball is the center of the play. The spherical ball
used in beach volleyball is either made up of flexible synthetic material or leather.

The ball is striped with bright colors which makes it look beautiful and attractive. The
weight of the ball is around 300 grams. The internal air in the ball is around 0.200 kg per
square centimeters. The circumference of the ball should not exceed 70 cm and should not
be below 65 cm.

3. Knee Pads

Knee pads are very important for the players who are playing beach volleyball. One of the
major equipment in playing beach volleyball is knee pads. They provide stability to the leg
of the player which allows him to play up to his potential.

4. Uniforms

These uniforms represent the player belonging to same team or same country has same
dress. Players normally prefer to wear swimsuits while playing beach volleyball.

5. Sunglasses and Sun Protection

As already mentioned that these matches are normally held under the Sun in an open
ground, the players are very keen on protecting their body and specially their eyes.
sunglasses. To protect their eyes, they wear sunglasses. To protect their body from harsh
sunlight, they use sun cream on their body.
Scoring System of Beach Volleyball

Beach volleyball consists of three sets, but it is played as best of three sets. Best of three
means if a team wins the first two sets, then that team will win the match. Each set is of 21
points and the team that scores the 21 points earlier than the other team wins the match.2

The team that scores 21 points first must have a two point advantage than the other one.
So if the score level is 21-20, then the set will keep on until two point advantages are
achieved. It means if the score will indicate 24-22 or 25-27, then the set will be over.

The third or the decisive set will be maximum of 15 points unlike 21 in the first two. Teams
can switch ends after every 7 points. In the last set, they can change it in 5 points. Point is
awarded to that team which is able to drop the ball on the ground at the opponent's side.
Whenever a team fails to deliver the ball in a legal manner, they commit fault and the other
team gets a point.

Skills in Beach Volleyball

Serve - A player stands behind the inline and serves the ball, in an attempt to drive it into
the opponent's Court. Ace when the ball lands directly into the court or travels outside the
cOurt after being touched by an opponent.

Set - The main goal of setting is to put the ball in the air in such a way that it can be
driven by an attack into the opponent's court.

Pass -The main goal of passing is to prevent the ball from touching the court, and also
making it reach the position where the setter is standing quickly and precisely.

Attack - spike is usually the third contact. The object of attacking is to handle the ball so
that it lands on the opponent's court and cannot be defended

Block - blocking refers to the actions taken by players standing at the net to stop or alter
an opponent’s attack. The jump should be timed so as to intercept the ball's trajectory prior
to it crossing over the net.

Officials of Beach Volleyball

Referee

The referee is the individual at the center of the court, dressed in black and white stripes. A
referee's duties include signaling when a rally begins and ends. The referee is responsible
for officially recognizing team requests, substitutions, time-outs and communicating with
the coaches at the appropriate times.

Scorekeeper

The scorekeeper creates official records of volleyball games. Before play begins, the
scorekeeper records team and player information. Once the game begins, scorekeepers not
only track points, but also player substitutions, sanctions and time- outs. The scorekeeper
keeps an eye on the individual serving the ball to track the rotation and notify referees of
potential lapses. At the close of the game, the scorekeeper records the final score of the
game.
Assistant Scorekeeper

The assistant scorekeeper or libero tracker is responsible for updating the scoreboard and
keeping an eye on the libero. The libero tracking duty was added in 1999. This individual
records changes in the libero rotation, notifying referees when problems occur in the
rotation.

Line Judges

There are usually two line judges, one at either end of the court, usually in opposite
corners. Line judges work with the referees, signaling to assist in making judgment calls.
These officials often use flags to signal when a ball is in or out, hits the antennae of the
net, or when the server commits a foot fault, or steps outside the line as they serve
