PEC101 CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS / PROJECT CARNIVAL REFLECTION

1.0 Introduction

1.1.1 Background of the project carnival

On 9th December 2019, my classmates and I who are the students of Critical Thinking Skills
subject (PEC101) had an exhibition as our major project for this subject. The topic was
“Climate Change” and we have to create a poster about climate change effects with recycling
things. This exhibition is mainly to create awareness among students and other people about
climate change effects and how do we overcome the problem. Because climate change really
effects the ecosystem. The climate change is mainly cause by the human being that is why
this exhibition is really important to create awareness among students and other people.

The exhibition started at 2 PM and ended at 4 PM. Every group has to choose their own
issues which effects the climate change, me and my group choose “Global Warming” as our
issue for this exhibition because it is one of the major problems on our planet and it is affecting
us directly and indirectly. Therefore, this exhibition is a suitable platform to inculcate moral
values among students and other people to love the nature and take initiative to preserve them
instead of cutting them off.

2.0 Questions:

2.1.2 How was the preparation of getting ready to take part in the tasks for major project?
Describe how you get prepared mentally, physically, emotionally financially etc.

The preparation for our major project. I get prepared mentally and physically by start
practicing two days before the exhibition on how to create the poster with by doing sketch of
the poster and practice with the points that I am going to speak by reading more articles based
on the issue that we have chosen. I memorize the opening and the main points that I should
talk for the exhibition this make me more confident than nervous. I did some physical activities
by doing light stretching and take a brisk walk at U Plaza and I take several deep breaths.

Besides that, I also get prepared emotionally. Firstly, I understand myself and I need to know
what I want for this project and what I need to accomplish. I need to critical thinking skills,
creative thinking skills, teamwork skills and communication skills for this project. I can improve
those skills by participating in this kind of activity. Secondly, I have to be a accept my
responsibility for this project and I also put my efforts as well.

Finally, I was also financially prepared, we set a budget for our project and we discuss about
the overall budget for our major project but for our major project we need to use recycling
things so we didn’t spend much. Because each group members contribute recycling items to
create the poster.

2.1.3 What are the initiatives has been contributed by you and your group members to
accomplish the task

The initiatives that has been contributed through out this major project exhibition by me and
my group members. Firstly, about the materials that me and my group discuss what we are
going to use to create our poster than we list out the materials and each of us will bring those
materials for the major project. Materials that we use in this project, newspapers, used tissues,
box, used cotton, hardboard and biodegradable straw. This are the recyclable materials that
me and my group members used to create the poster.

Secondly, all of my group members are really creative and they always come on time for the
group meeting. They also came early for our major project exhibition. They came early as we
mentioned to our group members one day before the exhibition that all the group members
should come early so that we can discus and plan about what we are going to do for our poster
again before the exhibition start so that it will be easy for us to do the poster within the given
time.

Finally, me and my group members share the expenses equally. The things we used for our
major project is recyclable materials so we did not spend much for our project and each group
members contribute one recyclable thing for our project.

2.1.4 What are the challenges faced by you and your group during the participation

The challenges me and my group members faced during the participation, when we were
creating our poster in a limited time which is one hour fifteen minutes this the time given for
every group to create their poster.

Me and my group faced challenges during the exhibition presentation because we had to
explain our poster based on the six thinking hats skills and we have to explain it to three
panels. For the first presentation we did not go in order who while presentation but after that
we manage to follow the order so there will be no confusion and no one will interrupt while
other members presenting.

Besides that, the second challenge we faced was, me and my group members need to stay
fresh because we have to give the same presentation again and again to three panels. We
need to remember our points and present to all the three panels without forgetting the points.
These are the challenges that we faced during our major project exhibition.

2.1.5 Justify how 6 thinking hats has been utilized by you in preparing and participating
in the task

Six thinking hats that I have been utilized during preparing and participating in the task.

Green Hat, I used this hat to generate new ideas for the poster because we need to be
creativity to do a global warming issues poster with recyclables things. During participating I
do give creative ideas and did the poster before the exhibition.

Blue Hat, I used this hat to think about the poster idea with my group members and we plan
what materials that we are going to use and the process to do poster.

Black Hat, we had difficulties on poster because we need to do the poster with recycling things
so we did have the perfect colors for our poster. If we use watercolor or new things it won’t
work it will be rejected or we will get low marks.

Yellow Hat, the benefits of this poster exhibition is to create solution for global warming and
the benefits are, we can reduce the usage of vehicle and replace it with public transport, plant
more tree, reduce industrial wastage.

Red Hat, during presentation when I explain the ideas to overcome the global warming issue
I felt sad because our the resources on our planet will be dry out very soon because of global
warming. Everyone should love the nature the only thing that can reduce the level of carbon
dioxide.

White Hat, while presentation I had to recall all the information about global warming and how
to overcome it. I used this hat to remember all the points during presentation.

2.1.6 What have you achieved by participating in PEC101 Critical Thinking Skills project
carnival

Through this exhibition, I gained skills and experiences which I will always treasure.
The skills which I gained were critical thinking, creative thinking, teamwork skills and
communication skills. By infusing all these skills in me, I have increased my self-development.

One of the skills which I have gained from the exhibition is critical thinking, I think critically to
choose our issues for the poster, then we choose ‘Global Warming’. I have suggested few
ideas for the poster to my groupmates and it was accepted by them but we need more ideas
for the issue that we choose. This is where my critical thinking skills is being tested as I tried
my best to think more creatively and I come up with more ideas for poster.

Besides that, I have also used my creative thinking skills to create the poster model with
recyclable materials. I share my ideas with my groupmates as to how to design the poster with
the materials that we came up with. I have decorated and drew some of the parts of the model
by using my creativity.

Furthermore, I have also developed my teamwork skills through the preparation of

exhibition. This is when I work together with my groupmates to complete the poster. Everyone
works together and helped each other to complete the poster. I have also helped my
groupmates whenever they face difficulties in doing something and we help each other. That
is what teamwork is.

Apart from that, I have also developed my communication skills where I presented the
issues of global warming and the solutions for global warming to the lecturer who evaluates
our work. I was able to communicate well because I practiced my speech beforehand and that
was the reason why my speech was smooth. I have also been spontaneous when I was posed
by questions from the lecturers and I did answer the questions spontaneously. Presentations
tend to improve my communication skills because as I practice it always and the speech gets
better.

In conclusion, I feel very proud of myself because I have actually come up with
solutions for the global warming issue together with my groupmates as I love the nature. The
skills which I mentioned above got improved and I get better at those skills through this
exhibition. I hope that this kind of exhibition should be implemented next time as well so that
it helps to create awareness to the people out there

3.0 Conclusion

The importance of conducting Critical Thinking skills project carnival for students,
because student will be able to improve their general thinking skills, the ability to think clearly
ad rationally. Students will also learn to work in team and develop their teamwork skills.
Besides that, this will also enhance language and presentation skills for the students. Students
will think more creatively and come up with more creative solutions. Students also can improve
their good thinking skills and communication skills which can help them learn quickly and solve
problem, show their creativity. In daily life for students this skill will help them in better decision
making, helps making good decision in important social, political and economic issues. By
conducting Critical Thinking skills project carnivals helps students to be aware with current
issues and they could bring up better solutions for it. This is why conducting Critical Thinking
skills project carnival is important.
