1. GENERAL
This Specification covers the requirements for design and material of thermal insulation to
be applied in BANGGAI AMMONIA PLANT PROJECT of PT. Panca Amara Utama.
This specification shall be applied to the thermal insulation for equipment and piping
shown on the P&ID and utility flow diagram, but not to the thermal insulation to be supplied
by manufacture complete with equipment.
2. REFERENCE
The requirements contained in the latest edition of the following standard shall form a part
of this specification in the manner and to the extent specified herein: 1

The SUPPLIER shall be responsible for ensuring that the equipment/system supplied
meets all applicable regulations on health, safety and environment. It shall be designed to
operate safely and satisfactorily at all expected combinations of process, utilities and site
conditions which include those at start-up, operation, shutdown and emergency cases
while retaining the overall system security, reliability and availability.
5. UNITS
Unless otherwise specified, Metric System of Unit (MKS) shall be applied as the
measurement system for the drawings and documents to be submitted. Nominal sizes of
piping components shall be in accordance with inch system (NPS).
6. RESTRICTIONS
1. Where materials are referred to by trade names within this specification, the use of such
names is intended to describe the kind or quality of material required and any deviation
must be submitted in writing for Owner approval.
2. Galvanized or zinc coated materials shall not be in contact with metal surfaces that have
temperature above 370 °C. It shall not be used inside insulation for stainless steel pipe
or at location it could drip on stainless steel in case of fire, in order to avoid zinc attack.
3. Insulation materials shall contain maximum 10 ppm chloride. If chloride level of the
available material is higher than 10 ppm, ASTM code C ‐ 795 shall be applied and
confirmed within the acceptable range. The insulation material shall also not content

other compounds which could have a deleterious effect on the pipe or equipment with
which they are in contact.
4. Insulation containing sodium plus silicate shall not be used for insulating austenitic
stainless steels containing molybdenum (such as type 316) operating at 815 °C or
greater in order to avoid intergranular corrosion cracking.
5. Insulation materials containing asbestos shall not be used.
6. No insulation material shall be applied between pipe and tracer except for spacers to
prevent local overheating of the pipe.
7. Contact between dissimilar materials which might cause galvanic corrosion shall be
avoided.
8. No flammable materials shall be attached to the insulation.
7. EXTENT OF INSULATION
7.1 General
Anti-Sweat insulation shall be applied to equipment and piping operating at above 0 °C but
below the ambient temperature, if surface condensation of moisture would provide an
adverse effect as shown below.
1) Electrical hazard
2) Damage to equipment
3) Surface condensation providing discomfort to working personnel
7.5.1 Cold insulation shall be applied to equipment and piping operating at temperature
below 0 °C, where reduction of heat gain and prevention of surface condensation is
desired.

Dual Temperature insulation shall be provided for piping and equipment which operate
normally at cold temperature below 0 °C, but which are subject to high temperature above
80 °C during regeneration, for instance.
Sound Insulation shall be applied to piping and equipment to reduce noise level radiation
down to max 85 dB (1 meter from center of noise)
7.8 Limitations
The following piping components & equipment shall not be insulated unless otherwise
specified.
1) Visible parts such as Name plate, code inspection plates, stampings, sight glass and
level gauge.
2) Shield or guard
3) The following parts of the rotating machinery, which need a heat dissipation and
cooling, unless otherwise specified
4) Fans, compressors, blowers or other rotating or reciprocating equipment or
machinery, unless otherwise specified.
5) Down stream piping of block valves without tracing ( for steam traced line)
6) Safety valves along with its outlet piping and down stream piping of such valves as
steam blow off valve, vent and drain valve.
7) Steam traps and the lines down stream of them which require no recovery of heat of
the drain and no prevention of freezing-up, unless specified in the drawing.

7.8.4 Sound Insulation
Piping components & equipment indicated in 7.2 and 7.3 shall not be insulated unless
otherwise specified
1) Insulation shall have clearance with pipe support beam and structure. It shall not
protrude over pipe shoe or cradle shoe
2) Insulation shall not be restriction against thermal movement of pipe at guide support /
directional stopper support. Clearance with other pipes shall also be checked
especially at elbow located long distance from anchor support.
1) Cradle support shall be attached to pipe by glue so that insulation is not breaking by
movement of cradle support.
2) Cradle support shall be protected from water by vinyl cover etc. until vapor barrier is
installed.
8. MATERIAL
8.1 General
All insulation and finishing material should be new, free of damage and in conformity with
this specification and the minimum requirement. Materials shall be protected against 1
weather and moisture during transportation and delivered at site in the original packaging
and stored clear of the ground.
Insulation, fastening and sheet material to applied on stainless steel surfaces shall not
contain zinc or be galvanized. To prevent interchanging of insulation materials intended
for stainless steel application and intended for carbon/low/alloy steel application, the
material intended for stainless steel and their packing shall be clearly indentified.
Specification and standard application of insulation material for hot and personnel
protection services shall be as follows :

Thermal conductivity shall be tested in accordance with ASTM C177 and measured at 24oC for 1
freshly blown foam sample.
(1) When cold insulation material is furnished with pre-laminated vapor barrier such as
aluminized polyester film or equivalent, vapor barrier coating and reinforcing material
as specified in Par. 8.9.2 are not required. 1
(2) Cellular Glass shall be applied if nonflammable insulation material is required
(3) External metal surfaces of equipment and piping shall be coated with tar-epoxy or
epoxy resin prior to application of insulation, when the Rigid Preformed Cellular
Urethane insulation is applied for service with operating temperature 0 °C and above.
(4) Special fabrication or techniques for installation may required this characteristic is
useful as dual temperature insulation material.
Thermal conductivity shall be tested in accordance with ASTM C177 and measured at
24oC for freshly blown foam sample.
8.5.1 Insulation for material shall be selected to withstand the service temperature range
in hot and cold. For example cellular glass can be applied to lines with normally
cold/ regeneration hot because its application temperature is wide between -268°C
and 427 °C because condition.
8.5.2 In case change of material is practical, dual layer insulation may be considered. The
inner layer shall be hot insulation material to protect cold insulation from high
temperature and outer layer shall be cold insulation material.

9. THICKNESS OF INSULATION
The thickness of hot insulation, personnel protection, cold insulation, dual temperature
insulation, and accoustic insulation are given in Table 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 respectively,
and shall be 25 mm as a minimum excluding the thickness of jacketing materials,
weatherproof mastic, etc. Those thicknesses are calculated according to JIS, A9501 with

given design parameter. Thicker thickness of insulation shall be applied from the product
range when the standard layer thickness of product for insulation materials does not
conform to the thickness specified in the Table:
2) The thickness of insulation on the nozzles and other protrusions (including parts of
structure) around equipment and piping shall generally be equal to the thickness of
adjoining pipe insulation.
3) For towers, vessels, heat exchangers and rotating machinery, the insulation thickness
specified as “PLANE” in the Table shall be applied except that the thickness of pipe
insulation shall be applied for the equipment with outside diameter up to 600 (NPS 24)
mm which can be regarded as pipes instead of “PLANE”.
4) For towers in which inside operating temperature varies with height, the thickness of
Hot insulation may vary depending on the temperature.
5) For instrument piping below NPS1/2 (15mm), as a rule, glass tapes with aluminum foil
shall be applied by overlapping a half width of the tapes. For displacement type level
gages or similar instrument devices, the insulation thickness shall generally be equal
to the thickness of adjoining equipment nozzle insulation.

10.1.1 In general, insulation shall not be applied to pipe lines until after completion of
hydrostatic pressure piping and tightness (pneumatic) test are completed. In case
insulation work proceeds in advance of hydrostatic testing and inspection, all joints
shall be left uninsulated until testing is completed.

10.1.3 Nameplates and code inspection plates shall remain visible after insulaton is
applied. The insulation edge aongside the plate shall be throughly weather proofed.
10.1.4 Insulation on skirt and leg supported vessels shall be terminated 0.6 meter below
the tangent line.
10.1.5 For cold insulation and anti-sweat insulation, joint at blocks or pipe insulation shall
be fully sealed with joint sealer according with ASTM C-591. An effective continuous
vapor barrier shall be provided on the outside surface of the insulation. The
insu;lation shall be carried out before the surface cools below dew point of moisture.
