2.0 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The Helium Rich Gas Compressor, 15-MJ05, is a centrifugal compressor NP model
BCL304 driven by an electric motor.
The Helium Rich Gas Compressor, 15-MJ05, receives its helium rich gas supply from
the overhead of the Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15MD03. The helium rich gas feed
enters the Helium Rich Gas Compressor, 15-MJ05, at 4.2 barg and -38°C and exits
at 7.8 bar-g and 11°C.
The compressed helium rich gas stream is sent to the Helium Purification Plant for
further processing.
The Helium Rich Gas Compressor, 15-MJ05, has a discharge pressure controller 15-
PIC-1527 which resets the motor speed controller 15-SIC-1516. The compressor
also has anti-surge controller 15-UIC-1513 which prevents compressor surge by
controlling the kickback flow through the Helium Rich Stream Compressor Discharge
Cooler, 15-MC13 to the suction of the compressor.
When the compressor is bypassed, the Helium Gas Heater, 15-ML06, an electric
type heater will be put in service, and a supplemental supply from BOG header is
used when minimum flow to Helium Purification Plant is not met. Operating pressure
in the Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum 15-MD03 will be increased to 7.5 bar-g in this
operating mode.

3.0 OPERATIONS
3.1 Normal Running
This section provides a description of the operating parameters for the Helium
Compressor System. Refer to Section 3.2 for a list of typical operating variables for
this system.
3.1.1 Helium Rich Stream Compressor 15-MJ05
The Helium Rich Gas Compressor, 15-MJ05, is a variable speed electric motor
driven centrifugal compressor. It receives the helium rich gas feed from the Helium
Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03, through the LMR/ Helium Rich Gas Heat
Exchanger, 15-MC06.
The compressor is started and stopped locally by the operator. If the compressor is
started from the DCS using switch 15-HS-1514, an operator should observe the
compressor in the field. The compressor speed is controlled by 15-SIC-1516 which
adjusts the motor speed to maintain the pressure set by the compressor’s discharge
pressure controller, 15-PIC-1527.
The discharge temperature of the compressor is controlled by 15-TIC-1304 through
the bypass valve 15-TV-1304 around the LMR/Helium Rich Gas Heat Exchanger, 15-
MC06.
The compressor control system monitors the pressures, temperatures, and flow to
ensure the compressor avoids a surge condition, with anti-surge controller 15-UIC-
1513. This controller adjusts valve 15-UV-1513 which recycles helium rich gas flow
from the outlet of the Helium-Rich Stream Compressor Discharge Cooler, 15-MC13,
back into the suction of Helium Rich Stream Compressor, 15-MJ05. The operator can
manually open this valve from the DCS with controller 15-HIC-1534. This will only be
used during startup or shutdown. The anti-surge controller will over-ride the manual
setting, if necessary, to prevent a surge condition.
Fuel Gas compressor 15-MJ04 is required to be operating to provide seal gas to the
Helium Rich Stream Compressor 15-MJ05 before it can be started up. Trip of the
Fuel Gas compressor 15-MJ04 will result in trip and isolation of the Helium Rich
Stream Compressor 15-MJ05 due to low low external seal gas pressure 15-PT-
5757A/B/C after blocked in gas volume is depleted. Low low external seal gas
pressure 15-PT-5757A/B/C also causes depressurizing of Helium Rich Stream
Compressor 15-MJ05 to prevent process gas from leaking across the seals.
3.1.2 Helium Rich Stream Compressor Discharge Cooler, 15-MC13
There is normally no flow through 15-MC13. It is used only when Helium Rich
Stream Compressor 15-MJ05 kickback valve is open for surge protection that helium
rich gas flows through the Helium Rich Stream Compressor Discharge Cooler, 15-
MC13, a fin-fan type cooler with one bay and three fans. It shares the fans with the
BOG Recycle Compressor Aftercooler, 15-MC17.
3.1.3 Helium Gas Heater, 15-ML06
The Helium Gas Heater, 15-ML06, is an electric heater which heats the helium rich
gas when the Helium Rich Stream Compressor, 15-MJ05, is bypassed. The heater is
operated through the hand switch 15-HS-1630 and the outlet temperature of the
heater is controlled by 15-TIC-1640. When the Compressor is bypassed or

3.3 Temporary Operations
3.3.1 Operation with Helium Rich Stream Compressor 15-MJ05 shutdown
During operation with the Helium-Rich Stream Compressor, 15-MJ05, bypassed, the
Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03, operating pressure will be increased to
7.5 bar-g using 15-PIC-1089. The higher drum operating pressure will allow the
helium gas to flow to the helium plant battery limit without the compressor.
Supplemental heating is provided for warming the helium gas with the Helium Heater,
15-ML06, from -41°C to 15°C. Additional flow to the Helium Purification Plant is
needed and provided by the BOG Header at a flow rate of 9,650 kg/hr at 39°C
through control valve 15-FV-1540. Also it should be noted that as the normal flow
rate to the Helium recovery plant through the compressor is 20,205 kg/hr, only
12,906 kg/hr helium rich gas can be sent to the Helium recovery plant by using only
the Helium Heater, 15-ML06, and supplemental supply from BOG Header.
Steps to start up Helium-Rich Stream Compressor 15-MJ05 4” bypass line through
Helium Heater, 15-ML06:
1. Helium-Rich Stream Compressor 15-MJ05 shutdown.
2. Gas from Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03, pressure controlled with 15-
PV-1089 maintaining upstream at 4.4 bar-g in AUTO, is flowing to cold flare via
15-XV-1642 or to fuel gas via 15-PV-1082.
3. Verify that the Helium Rich Gas Stream Compressor, 15-MJ05, is isolated at
manual suction 12” and discharge 10” valves, and the Helium Gas Heater, 15-
ML06, is blocked in.

4.0 START-UP
This section outlines the steps necessary to place the Helium Rich Stream
Compressor, 15-MJ05, in service. For the purpose of this section of the operating
manual, it is assumed that the following conditions exist: Main Cryogenic Heat
Exchanger 15-MC05 is in the process of final cool down and utilities are in service.
Helium rich gas will be available when cool down is complete and system is
stabilized. Helium Recovery Plant is ready to receive the helium rich gas, electrical
power is available and the system is purged and ready for start-up. If the Helium
Recovery Plant is not ready to receive the helium rich gas, the helium rich gas will be
sent to the Fuel Gas Compressor 15-MJ04.
4.1 PRE-START UP GUIDELINES:
Following guidelines are listed for a brief explanation for the pre-startup conditions of
the interface systems related to the Helium Rich Stream Compressor, 15-MJ05. Prior
to startup of the Helium-Rich Stream Compressor, 15-MJ05, and during the Helium
Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03 and Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04 cool down, the
Helium rich gas from Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03, is sent to cold flare via
15-XV-1642 with 15-PV-1089 cracked open while the isolation valves 15-XV-1544
and 15-XV-1545 on the upstream of the compressor, 15-MJ05, remain closed. At the
same time, the fuel gas from the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04, is sent to cold flare with
15-PV-1363 cracked open. This configuration will allow the LMR/Helium Rich Gas
Heat Exchanger, 15-MC06 to get simultaneously cooled down. At the same time,
Nitrogen Stripper Reboiler, 15-MC12 is cooled down by using 15-LV-1083.
When cool down process of the interface systems mentioned above are complete,
15-PV-1089 will be set in auto at 4.4 barg and 15-PV-1363 at 0.26 barg.
4.1.1 Introducing Helium rich gas to the fuel gas system
1. Verify that Helium rich gas stream from the overheads of the Helium Rich Gas
Flash Drum, 15-MD03, is lined up to cold flare through 15-PV-1082 and 15-
PV1363.
2. 12’’ Helium compressor suction isolation valve is closed and Helium Gas Heater,
15-ML06, is isolated.
3. Isolation valves 15-XV-1544 and 15-XV-1545 are opened and 15-XV-1642 to cold
flare is closed.
4. 15-TV-1001 and 15-TV-1304 are both on manual and ready to be placed in auto
when flow is established through the system.
5. The fuel gas stream from the overheads of the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04, is
lined up to cold flare through 15-PV-1363.
6. Once the LNG stream is started and fuel gas temperature stabilized, the Fuel Gas
Compressor, 15-MJ04, can be put in service (refer to Fuel Gas Compressor
Operating Manual PP-AAA-PP1-112, Section 4.0 Start Up ) and the Helium rich
stream will be diverted to fuel gas system by closing 15-PV-1363 which is already
set in auto.

full recycle.
8. Close helium rich gas to the Helium Purification Plant isolation valve 15-ESDV-
1512 with handswitch 15-HS-1512.
9. Turn off the compressor by using 15-HS-1514. Allow compressor and the motor
to go through the normal cooldown sequence.
10. Seal gas and Nitrogen buffer gas to 15-MJ05 can be stopped only after
cooldown, depressurization and compressor shaft stopped.
11. Shut down lube oil circulation pump 15-MJ05-ML01-MJ01/MJ01-A.
12. Stop fan for compressor recycle cooler, 15-MC13.
5.2 Process Upsets and Production Loss
In the event of an emergency requiring a shutdown of the Helium Rich Gas
Compressor, the system should be shut down as outlined above.
1. Loss of Electrical Power
Loss of electrical power will shutdown the Helium Rich Stream Compressor,
15-MJ05, the Helium Rich Stream Compressor Discharge Cooler, 15-MC13, and the
Helium Heater, 15-ML06. System will be isolated through the safety interlocks by
forcing controls to their fail safe positions.
2. Loss of Helium Rich Gas
Loss of helium rich gas will require the isolation of Helium Rich Stream Compressor,
15-MJ05 at a full recycle. If the condition persists for a long period of time the
compressor system may need to be shutdown.
