1.0 INTRODUCTION
This operating manual relates to the facilities indicated on Process Flow Diagram
PR-15-PR32-005 and P&ID’s PR-15-SYPI-006, PR-15-SYPI-006A, and PR-15-SYPI-
007.
The LNG stream from the Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03, flows to the
Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04 through the Nitrogen Stripper Reboiler, 15-MC12.
LNG product from the bottom of the stripper is sent to LNG Storage Tank 71-MF01
with LNG Product Pump, 15-MJ03/A.
Nitrogen rich overhead vapor from the stripper goes to the Fuel Gas Compressor, 15-
MJ04, after passing through the LMR/Helium Rich Gas Exchanger 15-MC06.
A liquid stream from the lower levels of stripper is circulated through Nitrogen
Stripper Reboiler, 15-MC12, to further cooldown the LNG feed entering the stripper.

2.0 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

LNG product from the Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03, contains 5.6% mole
of nitrogen. It counterflows through the Nitrogen Stripper Reboiler, 15-MC12, against
the cold stream obtained from the bottom liquids recirculation line of the Nitrogen
Stripper, 15-MD04. LNG product cools down to -153° C from -148°C and enters the
Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04
LNG product is flashed from 3.9 barg to 0.3 barg before entering the nitrogen stripper
which helps to remove a considerable amount of nitrogen by the stripper. It also
provides further cooling of the LNG product. The pressure drop in the stripper helps
in removing about 81% of the nitrogen content from the feed and drops the LNG
product temperature to -161°C at 0.3 barg before sending LNG product to the
storage tanks through the LNG Product Pump, 15-MJ03/A. LNG product leaving the
bottom of the stripper contains only 1.2% mole of nitrogen.
Nitrogen rich overhead vapor exits the tops of the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04, at
-164°C, passes through the LMR/Helium Rich Gas Heat Exchanger, 15-MC06 to
warm up to -38°C and flows to the fuel gas system.

3.0 OPERATIONS
3.1 Normal Operations
3.1.1 Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04
The LNG is flashed across 15-LV-1083 from 3.9 barg to 0.3 barg and enters Nitrogen
Stripper, 15-MD04. From the bottom of Nitrogen Stripper, LNG product at -161°C is
sent to the LNG Storage Tank, 71-MF01 through the LNG Product Pump 15-MJ03/A.
The vapour stream leaving the stripper overhead contains 40%mole of nitrogen and
60% mole of methane and enters the LMR/Helium Rich Gas Heat Exchanger, 15-
MC06 at -164°C to cool down the warm MR vapour stream from the HP/MR
Separator 16-MD08. The nitrogen rich overhead stream leaves the exchanger at
-38°C and flows to the Regeneration Gas Trim Cooler, 15-MC11 in the fuel gas
system.
The level in the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04, is controlled by 15-LIC-1349 by
throttling the LNG Product Pumps 15-MJ03/A common discharge valve, 15-LV-1349.
The pressure of the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04, is controlled by adjusting the speed
of Fuel Gas Compressor, 15-MJ04 through 15-PIC-1500. When the fuel gas
compressor is tripped or shutdown, pressure controller 15-PIC-1363 relieves the
excess pressure to the cold flare through 15-PV-1363.
3.1.2 Nitrogen Stripper Reboiler, 15-MC12
Nitrogen Stripper Reboiler is a thermosyphon type reboiler which receives the warm
LNG feed from the bottom of Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03, at -148°C and
4.4 barg. The cold recirculation line from the bottom of the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-
MD04, enters the reboiler at -163°C to cool down the warm LNG feed to -153°C. Cold
recirculation line flows back to the stripper bottoms at -161°C.
The LNG feed temperature of the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04 is controlled by the 15-
TIC-1342 through the temperature control valve, 15-TV-1342, on the bypass line
around the Nitrogen Stripper Reboiler, 15-MC12.
The setpoint on 15-TIC-1342 controls the amount of reboiling occurring in the
Nitrogen Stripper.
Increasing the setpoint will Decreasing the setpoint will
• bypass more feed flow around the • direct more feed flow through the
exchanger exchanger
• reduce reboiling • increase reboiling
• decrease the overhead fuel gas flow • increase the overhead fuel gas flow
• increase the N2 content in the LNG • decrease the N2 content in the LNG
product. product.
• reduce 15-PDI-1351 • Increase 15-PDI-1351

Excess reboiling will be indicated by an elevated reading on 15-PDI-1351 and can

lead to liquid carryover from the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04, which could damage
downstream exchanger 15-MC06. Maintain a reboiling rate that meets the N2
specification for the LNG product and remains below 15-PDAH-1351. A high high
alarm on 15-PDI-1351 will activate the MCHE trip stopping flow to the Nitrogen
Stripper, 15-MD04.

3.1.3 LNG Product Pumps, 15-MJ03/A

The bottoms leave the Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04 at -161oC and 0.34 barg and
enter the suction of the LNG Product Pumps, 15-MJ03/A. One pump is in operation
while the other is on standby. The discharge has a flow totalizer 15-FQI-1095 that is
compensated when the temperature reading 15-TI-1296 is measured then the
density is adjusted by 15-AI-1096J. The flow then goes to the LNG Storage Tank 71-
MF01. For more information on the LNG Product Pumps, 15MJ03/A please refer to
LNG Rundown Manual PP-AAA-PP1-111

4.0 START-UP
This section outlines the steps necessary to place the Nitrogen Stripper in service
after a short period of shutdown where the liquid level in the stripper remains at
normal while the system is isolated. For the purpose of this section of the operating
manual, it is assumed that the following conditions exist: electrical power is available,
utilities are in service, Nitrogen Stripper, 15-MD04 and Nitrogen Stripper Reboiler,
15-MC12 are ready for start-up. LNG feed is available, downstream units are ready
to receive the nitrogen rich overhead stream and the LNG product pumps are cooled
down with the stripper and ready to receive LNG products from the stripper. The
Nitrogen Stripper and the reboiler should be brought up to operating conditions
almost in a simultaneous order of starting up Helium Separation System as described
below:
Note: For a startup after longer shutdown, if there is no liquid level and the equipment
is partially warmed up to ambient conditions refer to the Startup Manual for purging
and cooldown steps.

1. Verify that the isolation valves 15-ESDV-1542 and 15-ESDV-1543 are closed.
2. Verify that 15-TV-1342 is in manual and closed.
3. Verify that level control valve 15-LV-1083 is manual and closed.
4. Verify that the nitrogen stripper pressure control valve 15-PV-1363 and
blowdown valve 15-BDV-1410 are on auto.
5. Verify that the nitrogen stripper level control valve 15-LV-1349 is on manual and
closed.
6. Verify that the Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum has liquid level established above
the low level alarm.
7. Open isolation valve 15-ESDV-1542 by using 15-HS-1542 to introduce LNG to
the Nitrogen Stripper Reboiler, 15-MC12.
8. Open 15-LV-1083 to slowly establish level in the stripper to the normal.
9. When the level is established, open isolation valve 15-ESDV-1543 with 15-HS-
1543.
10. Proceed with the LNG product pumps start up steps as described in LNG
Rundown Operating Manual, PP-AAA-PP1-111, Start-up, section 4.0.
11. Place the nitrogen stripper level controller valve 15-LIC-1349 to auto and verify
the helium flash drum level control valve 15-LV-1083 is set to auto.
12. Place the nitrogen stripper LNG feed temperature control valve 15-TV-1342 to
auto.

5.0 SHUTDOWN
5.1 Normal Shutdown
The following steps are based on a planned shutdown of the Nitrogen Stripper:
1. Verify that the LNG production is at minimum turndown rate and the upstream
units have already started to precede normal shutdown procedures.
2. Verify that the downstream units are ready for normal shutdown.
3. Verify that 15-PIC-1363 is on auto to maintain the stripper pressure.
4. Verify that temperature control valve 15-TV-1342 is manual and closed.
5. Close the isolation valves 15-ESDV-1542 through handswitch 15-HS-1542 to
stop the LNG feed flow from the Helium Rich Gas Flash Drum, 15-MD03.
6. Place the nitrogen stripper level control valve 15-LV-1349 manual and closed at
the low level of the stripper.
7. Shutdown the LNG product pump, 15-MJ03/A as described in LNG Rundown
Operating Manual, PP-AAA-PP1-111, Shutdown, section 5.0.
8. Close the isolation valve 15-ESDV-1543 through the handswitch 15-HS-1543 to
maintain the low liquid level in the stripper.
9. If the shutdown is only for a short duration, the stripper can be left isolated with
the liquid level above the low alarm so that the subsequent restart can be
shortened.
10. If the shutdown is for prolonged period of time, the stripper contents should be
vented to flare after the liquid inventory is drained and the controllers are put in
manual and closed.
5.2 Process Upsets and Production Loss
Listed events described below may cause temporary process upsets and production
loss but not necessarily shutdown of the system. An emergency requiring a shutdown
of the system should be shutdown as outlined above.
1. Loss of Instrument Air
Loss of instrument air will cause control valves to fail to their safe position.
Consequences of the loss of instrument air for the major control and isolation valves
are given below:
• 15-ESDV-1543, 15-ESDV-1542, 15-PV-1082, 15-XV-1138, and 15-PV-1363 will
fail close.
• 15-BDV-1410, 15-TV-1342, and 15-LV-1083 will fail open.
2. Loss of Electric Power
Loss of electric power will cause the LNG product pump to stop and the stripper to
quickly get on high level. In case of the high level in stripper, the high level alarm 15-
LAHH-1350 initiates MCHE trip and the trip of Fuel Gas Compressor, 15-MJ04
through the interlocks I-1550 and I-1570.
3. Loss of Feed

Page 9 of 16 KBR
NEW LNG TRAIN SKIKDA PROJECT DOCUMENT NO.
SKIKDA, ALGERIA PP-AAA-PP1-110
OPERATING MANUAL VOLUME I, SECTION 3-6: REVISION 3
NITROGEN STRIPPER 16 November 2013

Loss of LNG feed to the Nitrogen Stripper will cause the LNG level of the drum to
decrease and the level control valve 15-LV-1349 to close to stop the LNG flow to the
LNG Product Storage Tank.
If the LNG feed to the stripper cannot be re-established in a short time, shutdown of
the system may be required.
