its new rider… Therefore, necessity, not free

does He damn others who deserve not their

PUNISHMENT AND CHARITY

17. “If some were to teach doctrines

contradicting an article of faith clearly
grounded in Scripture and believed
throughout the world by all Christendom,
such as the articles we teach children in the
Creed — for example, if anyone were to teach
that Christ is not God, but a mere man and
like other prophets, as the Turks and the
Anabaptists hold — such teachers should not
be tolerated, but punished as blasphemers . . .

18. “That seditious articles of doctrine should be

punished by the sword needed no further
proof. For the rest, the Anabaptists hold
tenets relating to infant baptism, original sin,
and inspiration, which have no connection
with the Word of God, and are indeed
opposed to it . . . Secular authorities are also
bound to restrain and punish avowedly false
doctrine . . . For think what disaster would
ensue if children were not baptized? . . .
Besides this the Anabaptists separate
themselves from the churches . . . and they
set up a ministry and congregation of their
own, which is also contrary to the command
of God. From all this it becomes clear that the
secular authorities are bound . . . to in ict
corporal punishment on the offenders . . .
Also when it is a case of only upholding some
spiritual tenet, such as infant baptism,
original sin, and unnecessary separation,
then . . . we conclude that . . . the stubborn
sectaries must be put to death.” (ref.

publication, has received a lot of attention from

our brothers and sisters in the protesting
community. I have read all of the comments to
the blogs and messages boards that are linked to
this article, and here are some of their
conclusions. (1) The book Table Talk is not a
reliable reference for Martin Luther’s work
(ONLY TWO quotes above come from Table
Talk). (2) There is a problem with the
translation of some of the quotes, because some
are from German or Latin to French to English,
rather than from German or Latin to English. (4)
Luther’s violent comments against the peasants
are to be contextualized in light of the Peasant
Revolt of which he sided with the German
Princes. (5) Luther’s violent comments against
the Jews are to be contextualized in light of his
disappointment that they didn’t receive his
reformulation of the Gospel. (6) Luther’s
comments against Scripture are true. (7)
Luther’s comments against monogamous
marriage are true (probably). (8) Luther’s violent
comments against the Anabaptists are true, (9)
Luther’s comments against the Catholic
understanding of Freewill are true, and (10) The
only writings of Luther that conservative
Lutheran pastors are required to subscribe to
(because they strictly re ect biblical doctrine)
are the Small Catechism, the Large Catechism
and the Smalkald Articles.

intellectually honesty is betrayed by his passion

now this article has made it clear to me that protestantism is
the root of all that is happening in society today: legalization
of prostitution and abortion. he promoted lies and the
breaking of the ten commandments. he is that one step
towards atheism. and i pray that our protestant brothers see
this before it's too late. thank you, david! praise God! may
He bless you with more wisdom to share.

Mr. David Gray, not only James Swan but also I have to speak
on defence of Dr. Martin Luther..
Yeah it's true that Martin Luther was very passionate man. We
could speak about his sanguinic- choleric nature, being very
impulsive... Great passion of His led him to many statements of
these which for many people may sound either disgusting,
improper, or thoroughly unacceptable. However if I have to
criticize someone, then it's rather author of this article, than
Luther himself. It's all about to picking up and isolate many
Luther's comments out of their proper context, they been
uttered in. No wonder that out-of-context and isolated
statements of Luther naturally sound quite extremist..
But again now I blame not Luther, but author of this article for
biased view of Luther..

There are two groups of Luther's statements to comment..

First group are Luther's comments which is of dubious origin.
Especially those 2 table-talk alleged statements of Luther I can't

resources both Protestant and Catholic. It's a must read for
Catholics and dare I suggest Protestants? P.S. Love your site.

David, thank you for the time and love you have put into all your
research and organizing these facts. Most Christians are not
aware of the history of our faith and why we believe as we do.
Neither do many know how the church was formed and later
divided. Looking to Martin Luther's own writings, his heresy is
undeniable and points quite clearly in my opinion, that Christ
truly intended his church to be One, Universal and Catholic. God
bless you!

The items under Capital Punishment and Charity are ridiculous
only because they are based on Sola Scriptura, which is not an
objective basis for judging truth or falsehood of doctrine. The
Catholic Church affirms that toleration of false religions and
religious ideas should only be done to prevent a greater evil or
obtain a greater good.

From the Syllabus of Errors of Bl. Pius IX:

The featured comment above which presumably refers to Luther
when it says he promoted lies and the breaking of the Ten
Commandments is untrue. Luther taught correctly the theology
of Paul that we're justified through faith alone and that good
works don't render us righteous before God. However Luther
also taught that unless faith produces good works then it isn't
genuine faith, and also that it's necessary to keep the
Commandments in order to retain the Holy Spirit and faith.
Here's a quote from Luther to that effect:

"It is, accordingly, necessary to know and to teach that when

holy men, still having and feeling original sin, also daily
repenting of and striving with it, happen to fall into manifest
sins, as David into adultery, murder, and blasphemy, that then
faith and the Holy Ghost has departed from them [they cast out
faith and the Holy Ghost]. For the Holy Ghost does not permit
sin to have dominion, to gain the upper hand so as to be
accomplished, but represses and restrains it so that it must not
do what it wishes. But if it does what it wishes, the Holy Ghost
and faith are [certainly] not present. For St. John says, 1 John
3:9: Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin, ... and he
cannot sin. And yet it is also the truth when the same St. John
says, 1:8: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and
the truth is not in us". (from the Smalcald Articles)

Many of the quotes in this article are taken out of context and
give a very misleading impression. If the context was understood
then a different conclusion would be reached.

Also with respect to the Bible the idea that

heretical papists, which is what Roman Catholics
are, own the Bible as their book is nonsense. The
original authors the Apostles weren't papists.
Christ didn't establish the papacy and make Peter

justification through grace and faith alone which
means that the RC gospel is a false one which will

happened later when successive bishops
became power hungry and through
intrigue managed to gain control. The
history of the papacy is one of popes
becoming more and more tyrannical and
megalomaniacal until they were insisting
that no one could be saved unless they
submitted to them as God’s
representatives. The thing is none of this
can be derived from the New Testament.
The papacy is read into the text. It's not
there in reality.

So Roman Catholics today aren't the

original catholic Christians who existed in
the church prior to the development of the
papacy. Roman Catholics are papists i.e.
they believe in the papacy and regard the
pope as their spiritual leader.

The idea that Peter should be lord of the

Church was specifically ruled out by Christ
when the disciples were discussing
amongst themselves who was the greatest.
Christ's answer was that no one was to
assume a higher status than the others and
that all should be equal in that respect. If
Peter was going to be selected (or had
been selected) by Christ as lord of the
Church then Christ would have told them
that Peter was the greatest, but He did no
such thing.

A dispute also arose among them, as to

which of them was to be regarded as the
greatest. And he said to them, “The kings
of the Gentiles exercise lordship over
them, and those in authority over them are
called benefactors. But not so with you.
Rather, let the greatest among you become
as the youngest, and the leader as one who
serves. (Luke 22:24-26 ESV).

Saint Augustine also believed the world
was FLAT. In the 2,000 years of the
Catholic Church you will find various
opinions and interpretations, especially on
issues that aren't DOGMA. St. Jerome
didn't like the Septuagint. St. Thomas
Aquinas thought abortion was fine in the
first trimester. You, yourself, even loosely
quoted Pope Francis saying something
ridiculous.

What you have to look at is the consistent

teaching for 2,000 years. Saint Augustine
was a Catholic Bishop. He never denied
that the Bishop of Rome is the successor of
Peter. He never denied Apostolic
Succession or the Sacrament of Holy
Orders. That he seems to have offered a
new interpretation of his previous
interpretation proves that he doesn't think
he himself infallible.

Again, let's begin with the people who

actually knew Peter, Paul and John. What
did they teach? Let's look at their teaching
on the Holy Eucharist, the necessity of
Baptism, Apostolic Succession, Prayers for
the Dead, and all those other odd Catholic
teachings and then compare them to what
the Catholic Church teaches today? Are
they the same? Can we find those teaching
consistently for the past 2,000 years? Has
there been a change in teaching on FAITH
and MORALS?

The gates of hell have prevailed against the
popes and their followers because they've
left the true path and have invented man
made doctrines about purgatory, the mass
being a sacrifice, justification through
faith and works (in defiance of Paul’s
teaching in Romans 3 & 4 for example),
introduced the cult of the Virgin Mary etc.
The true Church consisting of the sum
total of everyone with true faith (and since
a person's faith can't be observed the
Church is invisible) is united with Christ,
but this is distinct from the popes and
their followers who are a false church. The
fact that the papacy has endured for

Luther said in a letter to Clemens Ursinus
(a pastor) in 1527: "Polygamy, which in
former times was permitted to the Jews
and Gentiles, cannot be honestly approved
of among Christians, and cannot be
engaged in with a good conscience, unless
in an extreme case of necessity, as, for
instance, when one of the spouses is
separated from the other by leprosy or for
a similar cause”. So you need to get your
facts straight before you make accusations
against Luther. He didn’t teach in favour

Also Luther was a doctor of theology and

I agree with a lot of your views but I think
you're wrong here. To say that God doesn't
directly communicate with his own in
modern times is incorrect, for Jesus says
as much many times throughout the New
Testament. And to stick up for Martin
Luther seems a little futile to me. He was,
as David mentioned, a bit of a lunatic.
However, I think the RCC is WAY off the
track because they're not being led by the
Holy Spirit and haven't been for a long,
long time. There's nothing in the Bible
about purgatory or the immaculate

And since David realizes Luther was a

around for centuries before we put our
Bible together and we didn't put it
together to be some sort of systematic
theology book. It was put together
primarily for continuity for readings at
Mass. Therefore, please don't tell us to
believe ONLY the Bible, when we predate
our Bible. Revelation for us comes via
Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture. It
is a much broader revelation of God than
Protestants have with just a Catholic Bible
with seven missing books.

Oh.... I see. It's the Protestant
understanding of the Papacy for you? You
are hung up about what even Catholics DO
NOT believe about the Papacy? LMBO
Divine Institution? Believing in the
Papacy?

On that note, I respectfully bow out my

friend. You are not even close to being able
to converse with me on these things, based
upon what you've demonstrated so far.
Blessings and Shalom!

“There are not a hundred people in

America who hate the Catholic Church.
There are millions of people who hate
what they wrongly believe to be the
Catholic Church — which is, of course,
quite a different thing.” Cardinal Fulton J.
Sheen

believe that the papacy was brought into
existence through Christ making Peter the
first pope, and that through apostolic
succession Peter passed on his imagined
authority to all of his alleged successors
the popes. So since you believe that the
papacy is God’s way of governing the
church and that the popes have universal
authority over the whole church you
therefore, to put it succinctly, believe in
the papacy and believe it’s a divine
institution.

There’s obviously a terminology issue

between us in that you appear unfamiliar
with the language some non-catholics use

One tip. Notice how EVERY heresy against
Catholicism was an attack on the
Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Satan is
obsessed with it. Even in John 6, Jesus
loses His whole following over that
