PAIR OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

1. Find the values of a and b for which of the following system of equations:
(i) 2 x  3 y  7
has infinitely many solutions.
2ax  ay  28  by
(ii) ax  3 y  a  3
has no solution.
12 x  ay  a

2. Solve for x and y :

x y x y
(i)   a  b ; 2  2  2 where a , b  0 .
a b a b

a b ab2 a 2b
(ii)   0 ;   a 2  b 2 where x , y  0 .
x y x y

3. In a two digit number, the ten’s digit is three times the unit’s digit. When the number is
decreased by 54, the digits are reversed. Find the number.

4. A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train would have been 6 km/hr
faster, it would have taken 4 hours less than the scheduled time. And if the train were slower by
6 km/hr, it would have taken 6 hours more than the scheduled time. Find the length of the
journey.

5. A boat goes 24 km upstream and 28 km downstream in 6 hrs. It goes 30 km upstream and 21 km

downstream in 6½ hrs. Find the speed of the boat in still water and speed of the stream.
