DECLAMATION

GUIDELINES:

1. The contest is open to all grade 7 & 8 students of St. John Colleges.
2. Each section can send in only one contestant (either male or female) and a total
of 6 participants.
3. It is an individual contest with top 3 winners (3rd Placer, 2nd Placer and
1st Placer Medals/Certificates and 7 certificates of participation for the
non-winners).

MECHANICS:
1. The contestant shall use the declamation piece entitled “Vengeance is Not
Ours… It’s God’s ”.
2. The piece shall be delivered within 3-5 minutes. Every excess of 30 seconds
shall be one point deduction.
3. Props (body or hand props), lapels, microphones are allowed but party poppers
& firecrackers are not allowed during the contest proper.
4. Audience ( especially the trainer ) must refrain from coaching during the
contest proper to avoid deduction.
5. Ranking system shall be used in determining the winners.
6. The decision of the board of judges is final & irrevocable.

CRITERIA:

*MASTERY - 40 PTS.
*CHARACTER PORTRAYAL/DELIVERY/ARTICULATION - 40 PTS.
(diction and pronunciation, ability to
interpret, emotions reflected in the
declamation piece by changing the
rate, pitch and volume of interpreters voice)
*STAGE PRESENCE/IMPACT - 20 PTS.
(posture, gesture, movement, eye contact, 100 PTS.
facial expression & attire/costume)

SPELLING

GUIDELINES:

1. The contest is open to all grade 7-8-9-10 Junior High and grade 11-12 Senior
High students of St. John Colleges.
2. Participants must wear their school uniform.
3. Both coaches and participants must be at the venue at least 30 minutes
before the start of the contest for briefing/reminders and giving of words to the
committee.
4. Contestants shall bring white Board (4”x12”) and whiteboard marker for the
contest.
5. The contest shall be facilitated by a committee composed of the following:
a. arbiter b. Bee Master c. Time Keeper d. Checkers e. Tabulator
6. The Meriam Webster Dictionary SINCE 1828 shall be used as the official
reference.
7. Each coach shall contribute 10 words for the first round or easy level. Only the
coach of the qualified contestants shall contribute 10 words for the succeeding
round/s. Contribute words shall bear the part of speech, correct pronunciation
and definition. And it shall be used in the sentence.

MECHANICS
1. The contest is done in 3 rounds: easy, average, and difficult. There shall be ten
words for every round.
2. The Bee Master must give the correct pronunciation of the word, including its
part of the speech, definition. It shall be used in the sentence. The word is read
twice.
3. For Time allotment: Easy round - 5 seconds/word
Average round - 7 seconds/word
Difficult round - 10 seconds/word
4. Ranking system shall be used in determining the winners.
There shall be only 5 contestants for every grade year level. We will have a
clincher round if there’s a tie winner vie for the championship title or for the
respective place of winner. The highest scorers shall be declared first, second and
the third respectively.
