1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This section should provide general information on the issues surrounding the business
problem and the proposed project or initiative created to address it. Usually, this section is
completed last after all other sections of the business case have been written. This is because
the executive summary is exactly that, a summary of the detail that is provided in subsequent
sections of the document.

This business case outlines how the Web Platform (WP) Project will address current business
concerns, the benefits of the project, and recommendations and justification of the project.
The business case also discusses detailed project goals, performance measures, assumptions,
constraints, and alternative options.

2. Issue
This section should briefly describe the business problem that the proposed project will
address. This section should not describe how the problem will be addressed, only what the
problem is.
An existing residential property located at Lot 48 Loftus Street for Mr & Mrs Smith requires
a new driveway to replace an existing narrow gravel driveway which is not able to provide
adequate access and carpark space.

This project will provide a new driveway to provide adequate access space for a vehicle and
adequate carpark area for 3 vehicles. There will be car park available for 2 family vehicles
and 1 visitor vehicle.

The car park area will service as a childrens play area.

Exclusions:
Boundary fence
Driveway entrance gate
Painting works
Landscaping

3. Anticipated Outcomes
This section should describe the anticipated outcome if the proposed project or initiative
is implemented. It should include how the project will benefit the business and describe
what the end state of the project should be.

PAMD will be the project managers for the design, approvals, and constructing of a concrete
driveway 20m in length and 4.5m in width. This driveway will provide access from the street
directly into the property. There will be a provision to expand the driveway into a carpark
area suitable for 3 vehicles. This carpark area will also provide the children with a play area.

4. Justification
This section justifies why the recommended project should be implemented and why it was
selected over other alternatives. Where applicable, quantitative support should be provided
and the impact of not implementing the project should also be stated.

The construction of a new driveway will provide the family for additional space for their
family vehicles, area for visitor car park and provide a hard surface play area for the children
will provide a greater benefit for the family who is currently a dust issue. The gravels causes
dust to coats the house and surroundings. This is a hazard for the family members. The
family has also been maintaining the gravel every few months, especially during the rainy
season. Other alternatives assumed greater risk, provided less benefits, were too difficult to
define, or were not suitably aligned with current requirements of the client.

The selection of a concrete driveway was determined because:

 Durability (25 year life span);
 Appearance;
 Materials available;
 Competent Contractors available
 Budget Allowance. Client has secured $40,000.00 for the project;
 Requirement (due to expanding family member numbers)

5. Organizational Impact
This section describes how the proposed project will modify or affect the organizational
processes, tools, hardware, and/or software. It should also explain any new roles which
would be created or how existing roles may change as a result of the project.

The proposed driveway will impact Smith Residence a positive ways. The following
provides an explanation of how the client and surroundings will be affected as a result of the
proposed driveway implementation:

Tools: the existing narrow gravel driveway will be demolished completely to allow the
proposed concrete driveway to be constructed and function. This solution is simple and
requires minimal maintenance by the client, compared to the existing gravel driveway.

Processes: The proposed concrete driveway provides a long term solution for an access for
vehicles for the family. This improvement will lessen the maintenance and control the dust
hazard.

Roles and Responsibilities: Not applicable.

6. Project Constraints
This section lists the preliminary constraints for the proposed project. As the project is
selected and moves into detailed project planning, the list of constraints will most likely grow
as the project plan is developed. However, for the business case there should be at least a
preliminary list from which to build.

The following constraints apply to the proposed concrete driveway project. As project
planning begins and more constraints are identified, they will be added accordingly.

 Inclement Weather;
 No carpark access for the client. Allow to park on the street;
 Allow for ramp access from carpark to main building (house);
 Vehicular access ramp from the street;
 Design constraints are the area required for the vehicular turning area; and
 Availability of contractors available and their number of labourers – Project will run
through the Christmas period and holidays if the commencement date is from October to
December 2018).

7. ASSUMPTIONS ANALYSIS

Due to the simple nature of this project, PAMD has not carried out an assumption analysis.
Note, the project constraints and requirements have been stated above.

8. RISK

The risks determined for the project are:

 Timelines
o Council approvals
 Scope changes
 Available competent contractor
o High workmanship required (avoid poor workmanship problems during
construction)
 Cost of materials increasing
 Weather during the construction works

9. COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS

Many consider this one of the most important parts of a business case as it is often the costs
or savings a project yields which win final approval to go forward. It is important to quantify
the financial benefits of the project as much as possible in the business case. This is usually
done in the form of a cost benefit analysis. The purpose of this is to illustrate the costs of the
project and compare them with the benefits and savings to determine if the project is worth
pursuing.

The following lists the cost and savings actions associated with the proposed concrete
driveway, descriptions of these actions, and the costs or savings.

Maintenance cost for gravel driveway: $2000/year x 25 years = $50,000.00

Cost of concrete driveway: $40, 0000.00. Maintenance cost = $0.00

This represents a significant improvement in our maintenance costs and is a clear indicator of
the benefit this project will have for the family.

10.DURATION

The duration for the project deliverables (milestones) are:

 Pre-initiation meeting – 3 days
