1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Project Information
The proposed RRTS corridor between Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut starts at Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi and
ends at Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh. The total length of corridor is about 90km with double track
and about two third of which is on Viaduct while the remaining stretch is underground. Two
maintenance depots are also proposed at Duhai & Modipuram along the corridor.

The purpose of this calculation note is to design the test piles for initial vertical and lateral pile load
tests for Meerut North station.

Initial Test Pile Reference Pile Diameter

S.No.
Location Borehole (mm)

1 Meerut North Station BH-611 1200

The calculation has been shown for critical Borehole for 1200 mm diameter piles only.

1.2 Initial Vertical Load Test

The testing will be carried out as per IS 2911 (Part 4): 2013. According to clause 7.1.5 (b), safe load on
single pile should be least of the following:
• Two-thirds of the final load at which the total displacement attains a value of 18 mm or
maximum of 2% pile diameter whichever is less.

• 50% of the final load at which the total displacement equal 10% of the pile dia.

For design purposes, vertical safe load for piles are considered as follows:
• For 1200mm dia pile = 800 T (for maximum vertical load in Meerut North Station)

As per Clause 5.1.2 of IS 2911 (Part 4): 2013, Initial load tests shall be conducted for not less than 2.5
times the safe load capacity of piles indicated above.

1.3 Initial Lateral Load Test

The testing will be carried out as per IS: 2911-2013 (Part 4). According to clause 8.4, lateral safe loads
on pile should be least of the following:
• 50% of final load at which the total displacement increases to 12 mm.

• Final load at which the total displacement corresponds to 5 mm.

For design purposes, lateral safe load capacity corresponding to 5mm displacement by considering
free headed pile condition for piles are assumed as follows:
• For 1200mm dia pile = 12 T (for maximum lateral load capacity)

So, Lateral Test Load considered = 2.5 x 12 T = 30 T

Reinforcement Calculation:

Reinforcement in the test pile cross section provided for the design moment corresponding to the
lateral test load = 30 T for 1200mm dia pile and vertical load considered for reinforcement calculation
for 1200mm dia pile is 3 times of safe load mentioned above that is 800*3 = 2400 T

8. FOUNDATION DESIGN
The foundation for main stations along the main line is supported by bored cast in-situ piles. The pile
diameter of 1200mm is considered.

8.1 Bearing Capacity Evaluation in soil

The bearing capacity has been evaluated based on the IS code. Evaluation of pile capacity for
cohesionless & cohesive soils are described below.

8.1.1 Pile capacity in cohesionless soil

The ultimate capacity of pile in cohesionless soils,

Where,

Ap = Cross-sectional area of pile tip, in m2.

D = Diameter of pile shaft, in m.

γ = Effective unit weight of the soil at pile tip, in kN/m2 .

Nγ = Bearing capacity factors.

Nq = Angle of internal friction, f at pile tip.

PD = Effective overburden pressure at pile tip, in kN/m2.

Ki = Coefficient of earth pressure applicable for the ith layer.

PDi = Effective overburden pressure for the ith layer, in kN/m2.

di = Angle of wall friction between pile and soil for the ith layer, in m2 .

Asi = Surface area of pile shaft in the ith layer, in m2

PD and PDi is Limited to the depth 15 times diameter of the pile below ground level

The bearing capacity factors (Nq) for bored piles are given in Figure 5

17/01/2020 Page 23/35
Figure 5 Bearing capacity factors, Nq for bored piles (Extracted from Reference [5])

It is to be noted that, for the design of bored cast in-situ piles, the angle of internal friction (Ф’) is
restricted to 33° due to the loosening effect while making the bore for bored cast in-situ piles.

8.1.2 Pile capacity in cohesive soil

The ultimate capacity of pile in cohesionless soils,

Where,

Ap = Cross-sectional area of pile tip, in m2.

Nc = Bearing capacity factor taken as 9.

Cp = Average cohesion at pile tip, in kN/m2.

αi = Adhesion factor for the ith layer depending on the consistency of soil.

Ci = Average cohesion for the ith layer, in kN/m2

Asi = Surface area of pile shaft in the ith layer, in m2

The factor of safety considered for safe bearing capacity is 2.5. The bearing capacity has been
evaluated for all borehole locations. The estimated pile capacity for the boreholes is presented in

8.2 Lateral Load Analysis

Lateral loading of a pile foundation is resisted by flexural properties of the pile and lateral soil supports
along the pile. The lateral soil supports to the pile is mobilized when there is a relative displacement
between the pile and the surrounding soil according to the deflection profile of the pile.
Modulus of subgrade reaction for cohesionless & cohesive soils are calculated based on Table 3 & 4;
IS 2911 (Part-1/ Sec-2) 2010 [4] as described below,

8.2.1 Modulus of Subgrade Reaction of Cohesionless Soil

Modulus of Subgrade Reaction for Cohesionless soil (ƞh), was calculated on the basis of Table 3; IS
2911 (Part1/Sec2) 2010, using Uncorrected SPT (N) Value.

Lateral stiffness of soils = K * Diameter of pile, kN/m/m length of pile

8.2.2 Modulus of Subgrade Reaction of Cohesive Soil

Terzaghi’s Modulus of Subgrade reaction for Cohesive soil (k1) was calculated on the basis of Table 4;
IS 2911 (Part1/Sec2) 2010.

Table 7 Modulus of Subgrade Reaction for Cohesive Soils

1 Soft 25-50 4.5-9.0

2 Medium Stiff 50-100 9.0-18.0

3 Stiff 100-200 18.0-36.0

4 Very Stiff 200-400 36.0-72.0

5 Hard >400 >72.0

Note: - For qu less than 25, k1 may be taken as zero, which implies that there is no lateral resistance

Modulus of subgrade reaction of cohesive soil, K = k1/1.5 * 0.3/B (diameter of pile), kN/m2

Lateral stiffness of soils = K * Diameter of pile, kN/m/m length of pile

The input parameters needed for computation of lateral stiffness are (qu) for clays and (N60) for sand.
The calculated lateral stiffnesses of soil along with the lateral capacities for each borehole tabulated
in Table 8 are presented in APPENDIX 2: Lateral Stiffness and Lateral load capacity calculations.

Lateral capacity of the piles considering the strata as sand and clay is presented in the Table 8. It is to
be noted that the capacities tabulated below are for free head conditions.

Test load is considered 2.5 times of expected safe design load. As per above table, test load is in order
of 30 MT for 1200mm diameter piles. Therefore, test the pile for test load of 30MT for 1200mm or
12mm deflection whichever is reached earlier.

To behave pile as a long pile for lateral load, proposed pile length for 1200mm diameter pile is 18.0m
below cut-off level.
