ACTING FOR A SUSTAINABLE
Context WORLD
With the world committing to the Paris Agreement on climate change,
development of non-motorized transportation infrastructure is being emphasised
all across the world.
However, the congested urban environment in a country like India, which houses
We help
almost one-sixth of the world population on 2.4 % of the global landmass,
presents a challenge to the development of such infrastructure. The major cities
in India do not have any scope for widening of roads to accommodate a
dedicated non-motorized corridor due to large population and high traffic
density. [Cities/Urban areas]
Overcoming these challenges is imperative because non-motorized
transportation not just offers a safe and sustainable means of commute but can
also be a fix for the last mile connectivity issues associated with crowded urban
spaces, especially the densely populated cities. To do [Seamless Transportation]
The solution to this problem can be thought of in terms of an infrastructure that:
• Has low space requirement
• Is easy and economical to build, operate and maintain.
• Is user-friendly and comfortable during its service life

• Providing a dedicated path for non-motorized transport is challenging in congested areas considering the space constraints.
• One possible way to overcome this constraint is by providing a multi-level corridor by converting the existing footpaths as shown in the
figure.

• Seamless last mile connectivity can be ensured by integrating the existing transport infrastructure with such corridors.
• Decentralised parking zones to be created and integrated with these corridors.
• Solar energy can be harnessed by installing solar panels on top of these corridors especially in a tropical country like India.
