1. How does Iggy describe Filial Piety?

2. What was the law recently passed in China and what are the roots of this law?

3. How can Filial Piety be a problem in a Chinese immigrant population in the United States
today?

Key Points:
• When we analyze a civilization, we can break it down into six different categories of analysis:
Social, Political, Interactions w/Environment, Cultural, Economic, and Technological (SPICE-T).
• Under the Song Dynasty, China underwent an economic revolution. The state fueled economic
development through things like improving the Grand Canal and encouraging the production of textiles
and porcelain for export.
• The Song dynasty was governed from the capital of Hangzhou, which was one of the world’s
largest and most prosperous cities at this time. The government utilized a bureaucracy with officials
chosen through civil service exams.
• Innovations in China by the year 1200 included things like the compass, gunpowder, printing
press, and paper money.
• This economic revolution was fueled in large part through the population growth caused by
champa rice, a fast-ripening and drought-resistant strain of rice from Vietnam.

• The Song Dynasty’s culture was based off of Neo-Confucianism, a mix of old Confucian beliefs
and practices such as filial piety or the civil service exams with new beliefs such as Buddhism. In
particular, Zen Buddhism originated in East Asia around this time, favoring more direct spiritual
practice.
• During this time, China had a massive influence on its neighbors. Korea and Japan in particular
were influenced to adopt Buddhist and Confucian beliefs as well as Chinese literary and political
traditions.
• The Chinese had a tributary relationship with nomadic people to the north. Although the
Chinese framed this as a continuation of the earlier tribute system in which they gave gifts to nomads,
in reality, over time the nomads had the upper hand here due to their military force as the Chinese
state weakened.
