STEPS DESCRIPTION STUDENTS

ACTIVITY
P.K TEST What is Current? Flow of Electric Charges

Do you know how many types of Current exist? “NO”

ANNOUNCEMENT So Today we are Going to Study about types of

OF THE TOPIC Current Electricity.
PRESENTATION As you all know that Electrical energy is
obtained from Cells, Batteries, Dynamos and
Generators Etc.
There are two types of Current electricity.
Direct Current & Alternating Current.

Types of Current
In which Electricity Does
Direct Current:
not Pass or Flow
Various Kinds of Cells, Batteries and Dynamos
are the sources of Direct Current.
The Terminals of a D.C source are marked as a
positive sign or red color at one side and
Negative Sign or Black Color at the other side.
Example: We see the terminals of a cell; it’s
one side is marked as Positive sign and the
other side is marked as Negative sign.

When a D.C Source is connected in a circuit,

the current flows in one direction only from
positive terminal to the negative terminal of the
source.

Alternating Current:

The Electricity we obtain from generators is

called alternating current.
When A.C Source is connected in a circuit the
current through it changes its direction
continuously. The number of times the current
changes its direction is called its frequency.

The A.C we use in our home has a frequency of

50 (Hz). In Some Countries, the frequency of
AC used is 60 (Hz).

The Need to use High Voltage sources can be

met if we use A.C. It is because A.C Voltage
can be increased or decreased to any extent by
the use of transformers.

From Power Station, Electricity is sent through

500 Kilo at very high Voltage line to various
grid stations in different cities. From grid
stations, power is distributed at 11,000 Volts
line to Streets in cities.

The Transformers installed in the streets change

the Voltage from 11,000 Volts to 220 Volts for
Domestic and Commercial Use.

The Change of Voltage from low to high and

high to low is possible only in A.C. Current but
not in D.C Current. It is Due to this reason that
A.C is used for Power Transmission.
