Carry out IR test 2.5 KV d.c. taking readings at one minute and ten minutes
after the initial application of the test voltage and compute the polarization
Index (P.I).
Rw = Pt (KV + 1)
Values for Pt are given in Apeendix-2 and should be used to determine Rw.
If the PI is greater than 1.5 and the 10 minutes IR is higher then or equal to
Rw then the machine may be energized without drying out.
2.1.2 Using very low inductive resistance equipment, measure and record the
stator winding d.c. references.
R- Y - ohms.
Y- B- ohms.
B- R- ohms.
Ambient – temperature
2.2.1 Measure and record heater element I.R. (all of them if more then one is
fitted):
IR = M ohms.
IR = M ohms.

one is fitted) :
IR = ohms.
IR = ohms.
2.3.2 Where fitted, check the shaft earthing brush for freedom of movement and
for good connection to earth.
2.3.4 Check bearing pedestal insulation resistance using L.V. test set (Megger
on 100V mange for example) lifting the earth brush/earth strap as
necessary and replacing after test.
IR should be at least 1.0 M ohms and preferably more for a now machine
in clean condition.
2.4.1 Check that safety clearance certificate and safety clearance notification
issued and effective for switchgear, cables and motor.
2.4.2 Check section 1 of this S.C.L. are complete.
2.4.3 If motor heater is fitted, check and record the circuit IR from the source of
supply.
2.4.4 Energize the motor heater circuit for the first time and if practicable and
safe measure current drawn is nominal and satisfactory. It may be left in
service or switched off as specified by manufacturer.
IR = M ---
2.4.7 Check safety notices and barriers erected as necessary.
2.4.8 Check motor uncoupled, free to rotate and any loose parts of the coupling
removed or securely fitted so as to be clear of all rotating parts.
2.4.9 Check cooling water services to the motor and its auxiliaries are in
operation and effective.
