3 Idiots: Movie Summary

The story begins when Farhan and Raju work together to look for their long lost college
friend Rancho who did not show up after graduation. As they try to search for their friend Rancho
they were reminded by their old college classmate Chatur to meet who is now successful running his
business and is obsessed by his contract for Mr. Wangdu. Chatur made a bet to meet after 10 years
on the day the three idiots made fun of him by changing his speech to humiliate the Professor as a
reminder that he will succeed and prove Rancho and his friends that they will lose. The story shows
flashbacks from their past college life on how they met and how their friendship strengthens them to
strive and fight for their dreams as well as facing challenges in their miserable college experience.
The story flashbacks at the time Farhan, Raju and Rancho met who took Mechanical Engineering at
the same school and the same dorm at Imperial College of engineering which was one of the best
colleges for engineering in India. They all have different ambition and dreams in life as well as the
problems they are facing with their family especially Farhan and Raju. Rancho is the naughtiest
friend among the three of them, he always ask questions and gives his own perspective and opinion
wisely about education. These three friends always encountered problems with their professors
specifically Professor Viru who is a college dean and was confronted by Rancho on the student’s
funeral who committed suicide and told Professor Viru that the pressure of the education system
murdered the student. Rancho met Pia who is a daughter of Professor Viru in an unexpected event
and it turned out later she became friends with the three idiots. It so happened that Rancho, Raju
and Farhan were drunk and both Rancho’s friend bet on him to confess his feelings for Pia. Rancho
went to Pia’s house to confess; as they flee Viru was awakened by their noise and saw Raju’s face.
He called out Raju from the class and expelled him from the college. Due to pressure, frustration and
depression he committed suicide by jumping off the window. Raju was rushed at the hospital and
was taken care of by his friends until he recovered. Rancho and Pia heard good news after Raju got
the job and Farhan was accepted by his father to follow his dreams. After the professor heard the
news he planned to fail Raju on the final exam. His anger intensifies and vent out his wrath with the
three idiots after knowing someone break into his office and tried to steal the test paper. They were
expelled that night and that night Pia’s sister was about to give birth. Since a heavy rain occurred
and the street was flooded the ambulance can’t make it while Pia was at the hospital. The three
idiots and their classmates helped Pia’s sister on her delivery while Pia is giving them instructions.
As the baby went out they thought there was no hope for the baby since it didn’t cry until Rancho
said his motto “all is well” the baby kicked and they keep on chanting and finally the baby is alive.
The Professor broke in tears in front of Rancho as he realized so much about what he has done and
passed the pen to him. All of them were very happy as well as their professor as they graduate from
college. Rancho was awarded as student of the year. After the graduation ceremony Rancho left and
was not seen or heard ever again. The story went back to the present time as they continue to
search for Rancho. A lot of things happened they stopped Pia’s wedding ceremony and brought her
with them to look for Rancho and the most twisting part of the story that they found out Rancho’s
true identity. They look for Rancho places to places until they finally found him on a small town as a
teacher. They were reunited once again and found out his name was not Rancho but rather he is the
most prominent inventor Mr. Wandu Phunsukh. Chatur did exactly he wants to do, to declare them
as losers as he thought Rancho became a teacher only. Without knowing he later found out that he
was talking to the person he obsessively wants to have a contract with.
