HISTORY OF BARRIO STA. LUCIA
Sta. Lucia is a small barrio located on a plateau between O’Donnell and the radio
transmitter of the United State Air Force.
Sta. Lucia was founded in the year 1900 by two families surnamed Estrada and
Conde. This two families who first settled in this barrio are Zambals. According to a
story told by one of the king of the Conde family their coming to this barrio was due to
a misunderstanding between their family and some Negritos in town of Botolan,
Zambales. The Estrada family being intimate of the Conde family went with them and
left Botolan.
Those two families ought to have settled in O’Donnell, but because they were
owner of a large numbers of carabaos they were attracted by the good pasture land
around the barrio now Sta. Lucia.
It was further told by the kin of the families that just upon arrival, the mother of
the Conde family gave birth to a baby girl with defective eyes. The family named the
girl Lucia and their settlement Sta. Lucia.
This barrio is not big as it was ten or fifteen years ago when the Military
Reservation was strictly prohibited for cultivation. At present this barrio has two
hundred thirty five houses strong.
A great part of its present population is composed of families coming from the
towns of Mabalacat, Concepcion Tarlac, Arayat and Manibaog. These farmers were
attracted by large tracts of lands in the Reservation where anybody is free to cultivate.
Most of the farmers in this barrio are independent because they have their own working
animals and farming implements and they are free to till within the Reservation, with
no one to share whatever they produce.
Aside from farming the people have a for avocation as vegetable raising , fishing
and cutting fire wood and still others engage in sawali weaving. During the months of
August, September, October and November, corn and vegetables are in abundance in
this barrio.
The La – Mallorca- Pambusco line, passes thru the heart of Sta. Lucia, which
makes it easier for the farmers to market whatever they produce. People who buy and
sell camotes, corn and gabi hauls truck loads of this crops every year during the
months December, January and February.
The great majority of the people in this barrio are Roman Catholic aside from a
few who are the followers of the Iglesia ni Cristo. At present a chapel has been erected
thru the joint efforts of the people. The people contributed at the form of cash,
materials, ad free labor. This barrio celebrates its fiesta every year on the 13 th day of
December.
The Sta. Lucia Primary School occupies a site donated by the eldest daughter of
the first Conde who settled in this barrio.
