Home connections

Important word to know:  What it means:

Civics  The time when we learn about how to be members of our

community, we learn our shared history, and we learn how
to make our community more equitable

Needs  Things you have to have to survive (Water, food,

shelter/clothing/protection, air)

Want  Things you would like to have

Right  Things you get to have in order to thrive and be your best
you: education, peace, justice (equality), freedom (to and
from others infringing upon your rights), belonging
(acceptance), happiness

Responsibility  Things you have to do to give other people their rights

Citizen  A member of a community who contributes to and receives

benefits from the community

Activism  Speaking and acting for someone else or yourself to make

positive change- using your voice to stand up for
someone’s rights/needs

Literacy connections: When you read with your
Scholar, be sure to ask them what the main idea in
the text is. As critical readers we have to identify
what the author’s message is so that we can
determine what the purpose of the text is. This skill
has been especially helpful when reading texts to
prepare for Black Lives Matter at School Week. We
have learned a lot of American history from texts in
order to understand the historical basis for this
important week.

Math connections: Ask your Scholar to name the
shapes to the right, identify the number of corners
they have, and count the number of sides they have.
You can also practice spotting them in real life in
both 2D and 3D shapes. Some 2D shapes will show
up as parts of 3D shapes (for example, a rectangular
prism might have a square on two ends).
