Operations Inc. (SPOI). 30% comes from other contractors having security,
housekeeping roles, etc.
1.2. SIGNIFICANCE
They pride themselves for the use of clean energy through low carbon
emissions with the use of natural gas and steam. On a regular, non-peaking
basis, they produce around 2000 MW, enough to power 1.4 Million
households which covers approximately ¼ of Luzon.
MALALUAN, Renz Marife

2.5. OPERATIONS, CONTROL AND MAINTENANCE
● December 16, 1996, FGPC executed an operations and maintenance
agreement with Siemens Power Corporations, Inc. Siemens both act
as contractor and operator.
● In June 2010, First Gas and Siemens signed a new contract to cover
the next 15 years of operation.
● Inspect gas turbine compressors air intake filters to avoid
malfunctions and defects
● Inspect heat exchangers and heat condensers for possible fouling
and scaling of tubes.

The total revenues for 2017 of First Gas Power Corporation is more than
$1B. Deducting the operating costs, taxes, and debt, the company has a net
income of $119, 632, 000 for year 2017. The revenue for 2017 is higher than
that of 2016 mainly because it is the first full year of operation for Avion and
San Gabriel. On the other hand, the FGPC’s net income decreased because
of one-time break funding cost incurred from the company’s refinancing of
long term-debt worth $500M last May 2017. [13]
3.7. CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Project Center of Center
aims to protect the Verde Island Passage in Batangas—one of the richest
and most diverse marine ecosystems in the world — from illegal fishing and
destructive commercial activities.
In partnership with Philippine Business for Social Progress, five hectares of
trees were planted in 2017, in addition to five hectares that were planted in
2016. The trees planted last year are thriving, with a survival rate of over 80
percent for both the agroforestry and reforestation sites.

In 2017, the Company participated in the repair and rehabilitation of 13
schools throughout the country. Moreover, First Gen continues to distribute
school supplies and support several programs that help students finish their
elementary education.
4. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING IMPROVEMENT
4.1. EQUIPMENT AND PROCESSES
For the equipment part, a mechanical engineer’s role is first to come up with
designs of turbines, compressors, and HSRG that will yield the most efficient
one up to date. The work does not just stop there. Providing energy is a
MALALUAN, Renz Marife
MARASIGAN, Sam
cyclic process since we always consume power. Thus, maintenance of the
equipment is a very crucial job of a mechanical engineer. He/she must be
able to check if the equipment is still in good condition for its specific job. In
short, a mechanical engineer is in charge of the operations and maintenance
of the equipment in the power plant.
For the processes, since it is the mechanical engineer’s job to design the
equipment, he/she can monitor the processes involved in power generation.
He/she can help in improving the efficiency of the current power plant by
examining which process could be modified.
4.2. SUSTAINABILITY AND IMPROVEMENT
Since mechanical engineers are responsible for the operations and
maintenance of the power plant in general, the sustainability of the power
plant is also dependent on them. Proper maintenance will ensure the
longevity of the equipment life span as well as the consistency of the power
plant’s overall efficiency. They can also help in improving the efficiency of
the current power plant by examining which equipment/process could be
modified.
5. BENCHMARKING
Pembroke Combined Cycle Power Plant uses natural gas as fuel. It is in Wales,
UK and has 5 440-W units, having a total of 2200 MW capacity. It started its
operations on September 9, 2012. [10] Shown in the table is the comparison of
First Gas Power Corporation and Pembroke Power Plant in terms of capacity,
number of units, and efficiency.

6.1. SUMMARY
The First Gas Power Corporation (FGPC) which is wholly owned by First Gen has
four gas-fired power plants: Santa Rita, San Gabriel, San Lorenzo, and Avion.
They have a total of 2,011 MW and can supply approximately 1/4 of Luzon Grid
or 1.4 million households.
6.2 OBJECTIVES
One of the missions of FGPC is to be the preferred provider of energy services.
The country has a dependable generating capacity of 3,291 MW for Natural Gas
for 2017. This shows that FGPC was able to deliver more than half of this, thus
accomplishing one of their objectives. In addition, FGPC is planning to build two
more gas-fired power plants, Santa Maria and Saint Joseph, five years from
now.[13] This will allow the company to be one step closer to achieving its goal of
advancing the natural gas industry in the Philippines.
To increase the efficiency of Avion, it could be converted to a combined cycle
powerplant. By doing this, the overall capacity of the First Gas Power
Corporation will increase.
FGPC is preparing for a post-Malampaya gas era with the plan of importing
natural gas by 2024. It will have the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification
terminal.[13] This will affect the cost of power generation which in turn will affect
the cost of the electricity in the country. This will also serve as a disadvantage for
the clean energy campaign of FGPC since coal fired power plants will not have
the same problem. Therefore, it will be a challenge for the company to keep up
with its competitors in the energy industry.
