Lesson Goal(s) / Standards: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease
prevention to enhance health.
Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health
risks.

Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to tell what a healthy eating habit is, and understand which food
groups are healthier eating alternatives for them through an exit ticket 90% of the time.

Materials Needed: Balloon

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: 20 third grade students with two students on an IEP. We
have 8 boys and 12 girls.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (3 min.)
· getting attention:
Asking a question: What is your go to snack after school?
relating to past experience and/or knowledge
· creating a need to know
· sharing objective, in general terms
I will be able to choose healthful meals and snacks.
I will be able to choose habits that prevent diseases.

2. Content Delivery (15 min.)


We will discuss what a habit is and why it is important to create healthy eating habits in their
everyday lives. It is hard to break a habit, so it is important that students start making healthy
habits now before it is too late. Students will come up to the whiteboard and write down different
types of fruits and vegetables. After this, students will play the Balloon-Toss Veggies game where
students will split up into teams and toss the balloon back and forth as they name a vegetable.
After each person says a vegetable they will go to the end of the line. We will do the same with
different types of fruits.

3. Closure (5 min.)
We will go over the objectives for the lesson and discuss what a healthy eating habit is and how
they can change their eating habits.
B. Assessments Used
Exit Ticket: Students will write on a blank sheet of paper what a healthy eating habit is and what
they will try to improve on when choosing a snack to eat.
C. Differentiated Instruction
For students who are having a hard time thinking of fruits and vegetables, they can look to the
whiteboard while playing the balloon toss game.
