The conference theme in 2020 is: “Constructive Diversity: Role of maker education in
building diverse learning environment across cultures”
Establishing the current “state of the field” by gathering information about the work conducted
by those in the field, and
Disseminating information about best practices and tools, and connecting researchers with
practitioners, policy-makers, and pioneering educators.
DAY1

The constructionism approach .. DSIL the 1st constructionist school inThailand was established in 2013
150 FABLAB nation wild …. Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and India
To facilitate learning, … Constructive Diversity: Role of maker education in building diverse learning
environment across cultures …
Learn Unlearn Relearn all together and keep the passion of learning …
Spirit of learning : Curiosity / Wonder / Exploration / Desire to understand : What happening around
us / Desire to make: we want to make something
2-way process
Learning Making
DSIL :
Maker community is global. University / Company / School dynamic moving and will grow much
more in the near future
The spirit of science: Evolved in the child by six honest serving men.
Mr. What / Why / When / Where / How / Who … Not just spirit of Sci, and also the spirit of learning
Spirit of investigation: Curiosity / Wonder / Exploration … with spirit of discipline to make sure what
you discover / spirit of rebellion … I may do better than Einstein.
Development: Using inventions and discoveries for human benefit and this world

Constructing
FabLearn helps to create the spirit of investigate and the sparks therefrom
Constructionist approach cultivates greater adaptability in working with various resources and
limitation.
Recognize > Prepare emergency kit > life hack activities > constructing solution > Reflection > group
project
Assessment: adolescence resilience in disaster tool: Helping / Adaptability / Self-confidence / and others
Learning: Adaptability and self-confidence has a notable increase in all divisions of students
Learning by doing: students build the led closed circuit using a coin cell LED and
copper tape. / sample / student learn on their own
Drawing inspiration from nature: Posture vs Nature / where do you feel for each posture … create
meaningful artifacts student know the benefit of yoga
Make it work light up when student post correctly create excitement / fun and enjoy
Paper#3 There’s data all around you: improving data literacy in high school through
STEAM based activities
Methodology
Data production
Data conversion
Data manipulation
Data visualization
Data relationship
3 days workshop
Hands-on activity: student learn data conversion and convert light to sound / exploring frequency and …
Data literacy assessment: 3 categories… not familiar with topic / more comfortable
- Evaluating everyday
- Learning evidence
Investigating maker assessment practices at school interview >analyze the collected data > identify
the main themes > analyze the themes to theory
Tools: Rubric, Checklist, Feedback, protocol and questions, design journal, reflection, e-portfolio, peer to
peer evaluation
Formative assessment tools for guide…to evaluate the whole process to student learning
Hunter 2 million yrs > Farming 10,000 yrs > Industrial 300 yrs
Urge theory Learning urges (curiosity, challenge) / Social urges (help, share, contribute) /
Construction mindset
Hunter society:
Farming society: lifestyle change / community is bigger / Pyramid 5,000 yrs > Roman empire 2,500 yrs /
start import food
Industrial society:
Exhibition (toys from wood and bamboo) Ask student to create something
See the bamboo (growing 10 yrs but cutting 10 mins) > Craft maker share the experience >
student make their own craft
Kids realize that … they appreciate the craft / understand the natural resources and how to
use them
Teach kids about sustainability … and we can do for all / we can motivate them.
Kru TookTa
K.Paron + MIT had set up since 1997. Vision: Change Thais Thinking by Learning
Difficulty is communication!!
What is constructionism?
It is not the theory. We cannot find the answer from the book. Individual learning is different.
Sharing Experience
Kru TookTa graduated from the old school. Test and Learn in DSIL since 20 yr ago.
NaNoi: the 1st time to hear “Constructionism”… K.Paron interview and ask for willing to
try.

Implementation step
Step1: Imagination
Step2: Planning
Step3: Documenting
Scratch x Coding:
Electrical works with remote control and testing: Proud of myself … A lot of people play my game.
Major project setback: Computer is broken. Everything I work for disappear. Facilitator asks “How do
you handle it?” I try again and can finish the game in time.
2. My experiences with making Electronic and Steam Boats, Lego robots and a Helper Robot
Next version … Making his size bigger and make it (my aspiration) true!!
All parts are recycled from dog toy and connect microbit by myself.
Puffy
Be light and small … we can use in the room and building
Move from place to place (detect air quality automatically)
Contain Micro plastic filter / carbon filter
Inside Puffy has lower pressure .. air flow inside Puffy via the filter
Measure PM 2.5 by sensor .. Light to show the severity of air quality. (Green /
Red/ Yellow)
Check Left / Right / Back before move forward

Time is the most pressure in the classroom. We don’t have time to review text book since 1478.
Constructionist vision: Cognition happens with external media within a culture, and with others; the
brain is never working in isolation.
Brain … not only written language … cognitive doesn’t create new thing but help us to have a
new idea.
Now we have digital media we can communicate idea / simulate in the computer / make
them move, not only in the paper expand cognition
S. Papert - “I am suspicious of experts who tell countries they have scarcely seen how to conduct their
affairs” (He don’t know Thailand enough to say what Thai should do)
Today everything worth learning is complex. All problems are complicate. How to solve these
problems?
Ethos … Now, Young people are taking charge for big issues.
They cannot wait for 20 years. They has the power. We shan’t
control them. Ex. Boyan slat / TIME magazine: ENOUGH

Makers in rural area … when I were young, I can tell where food
comes form. I help fisherman to catch the fish.
Companies will make profit, not only in city, but in rural area.
Makers stopped making and come to city for working.
Now, city is bigger area than rural. Those companies expand beyond Japan. We are losing maker
culture.
In the history, we use to pass this similar pattern ex. Rome Destroy environment Lost city
