L.A Marathon Expo

The purpose of the expo was so we could go help people with any information and give

them everything they ordered for the marathon. This is all a day before the marathon so people

can prepare themselves. What I do is go with a small group to the expo in the morning or the

afternoon to go help out. There are many shifts and to go volunteer you have be signed up to be

in the expo. This is a really new experience because both times I have gone to volunteer I have

been able to help out with distributing shirts and bibs (race number). This has been a really fun

experience for me to be a part of. Both times I have been at the marathon my goal has been to do

a great job in what I am put to do. It is very overwhelming when you get to the expo because

there are so many people you also have sign in and get your volunteer shirt. After all these

people are separated into groups and given a each a job to do. But at the end you gain a new

understanding of how job can be like and meet new people.

In this event there were many decisions I would have to be making when I was in my

shift. When I get there someone is there to explain to you what you need to do and what you will

be telling people. Some decisions where telling people what there would be after the marathon

and what kinds of gifts they would be getting after they ran. Steps I took in the expo where

knowing the information, what to tell people, and interacting with people. These were the steps I

took with when I was at the expo.

I learned that every volunteering job is different and they all require to interact with

people and meet new people. Something I really excelled at was meeting new people, there was
always someone to talk to for information or other questions they had. I have really gotten the

chance to get out of my comfort zone and talk to more people and not being shy. An area I think

I need improvement is being more interactive at the beginning with people.

I took action by going to a marathon expo and getting a volunteering job where I could

see they work and what they do. I also think I took action when I was interacting with people and

meeting them. Also assisting with help for the marathon. I communicated ideas by talking to

people and asking for help if I didn’t know the answer a question people would ask me.
